Surface book 2 power button not working unless I detach and reattach

This is quite infuriating as my PC won't come out of sleep mode unless I detach the tablet and then reattach it and then hold the power button for 5 seconds.

Am I doing something wrong? I haven't changed any settings

Hi,

If your Surface won’t wake up from sleep, try to simultaneously press the Windows logo key +Ctrl+Shift+B.

Here are some solutions that you can try to help resolve the issue.

Force shutdown your device

Press and hold down the power button until your Surface restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (this takes about 20 seconds), then release the power button.

Install the latest Surface and Windows updates

We recommend that you install the latest updates to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. You can find the details of the latest update on our Surface Book 2 update history page.

Clean the connectors on your Surface Book

  1. Detach the Clipboard from the keyboard.
  2. Clean the pins on the connector with a pencil eraser. Rub the eraser back and forth across the pins.
  3. Wet a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol. Clean the pins on the long, narrow part of the charger that you plug into your Surface. Rub the cotton swap back and forth across the pins. After you are done cleaning the connector pins, make sure that the pins are dry, and then reattach the Clipboard to the keyboard.

If none of the solutions work, I suggest that you bring your device to a Microsoft Store near you and have it checked by one of our personnel. You may also contact our Microsoft Support team for further assistance. If you're outside the US, contact our Global Customer Service.

    I am experiencing a similar issue since two days: the power button just does not react to momentary presses any more. Note that the display is off, so the device does not come back from power save mode. Additionally, pressing the power button for a longer time does not immediately help - I need to do this several time until the device eventually wakes. Note that, although the Microsoft logo appears, the device does not reboot, but it behaves as if it came back from sleep, ie all my running software is still there in its previous state.

    Hello Christoph,

    We recommend that you have your Surface Book 2 checked by a Microsoft representative from a physical Microsoft retail store for them to check the power button's functionality. However, with regards to your concern about the device is not booting and you see the Microsoft logo then the software you used is still there in its previous state, is a feature on all Windows 10 devices called Fast Startup. It enables the device to create a cache of kernels, drivers and activities prior to the shutdown command.  When the Fast Startup is enabled, the device is technically hibernating and not totally off, which then gives the device the ability to call the saved cache to load when the user turns the device back on. This feature was programmed to save time when getting back to what the user was doing before the shutdown. You can disable this feature by following these steps:

    1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, then click on Settings.
    2. On the Settings page, select System and choose Power & sleep.
    3. Under Power & sleep, click Additional power settings, and then click the Choose what power buttons do.
    4. Uncheck the box for Turn on fast startup (recommended)
    5. Make sure to click Save changes, then try to shut down to see if the issue persists.

    Luckily, the problem just disappeared in my case: I found that there was a pending update (Surface firmware) that Windows was trying to install and which continuously failed when the Surface Book hibernated over night.

    Since I have installed the update manually, the power button functions again as normal. I assume that the problem was caused by the combination of the pending update and the fast startup feature.
