Surface Pro 3 stuck on Boot screen when docked

My SP3 boots fine and acts normally when not docked, but when I dock the computer and boot the computer hangs on the boot screen.  I see the SURFACE logo but nothing else.  I've let it run for hours with no resolution.  This is not a random thing, but happens on every boot. 

Please do not ask me to check for latest updates... I've obviously checked for any and all updates, including optional updates.

I can boot the SP3 and then dock it and all peripherals work.  I've also tried booting while docked with no peripherals attached and it still locks on the boot screen.  I put another SP3 into the dock, and it boots fine.  It appears there is something corrupt with the SP3 having the problems, but there are no device problems or other issues that I can find.

It appears a recent firmware update has fixed the problem... it's at my fathers house, but he has not complained about it of late.

Hello jwu5062,

Given the issues you have described here, we recommend trying a reset and then installing all updates for the Surface again with your devices attached (i.e. monitor and Docking Station ). Before doing this, please backup any files you want to save, as a reset will erase your memory. You could consider doing this with external media such as sd cards, or you could use OneDrive to keep your files safe. This guide has more information about how to perform a reset. After the reset, search for all updates in Control Panel, even if your computer automatically finds and installs updates, check again in Control Panel after it is complete. This is how:

  • Open Desktop
  • Swipe from right and select Settings
  • Choose Control Panel
  • Click on Windows Update
  • Select Check for Updates
  • Restart your Surface and check for updates again.

If resetting and installing all updates does not resolve this issue, we recommend that you reach out to our Assisted Support team for further assistance. You can contact them through this site.

    Hi Susan!  I did give you my info several weeks ago and never hear back . . . ? 

    I finally returned the VGA/DVI monitor I had purchased with the SP3 and exchanged it (on order) for an HDMI monitor.  AND I purchased a Microsoft Mini Display to HDMI port adapter. 

    My new monitor has not arrived but I will post on the success or failure of this option once it arrives. 

    It would sure be nice if Microsoft would get up to speed on this issue and tell people what they need to run their SP3 in their docking station.  What a pain.  It would save them a bunch of money too since they sent me a new warranty docking station because mine was 'defective' except that it did the same no boot as the first one.

    i've been following this thread and another one ( http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpro3-surfhardware/surface-pro-3-stuck-on-boot-screen-when-docked/a94e9aa4-f2b7-496e-b62e-7c55f4fba70b?page=6&tm=1440224201813 ) for months as this has been an issue for my surface since the beginning: i can confirm that the behavior matches 100% the experience of DebWalker1000....I've tried with all kind of adapters and with a direct minidp to DP cable to no avail: there's no way to perform a cold start in the docking station if a monitor is attached to it through the minidp port of the docking station

    As i didn't want to detach the surface from the docking station every time i had to boot up with windows 8.1 the workaround for me was just avoiding shutting down and using the "sleep" instead...with windows 10 among other things  (yes, w10 has been a train wreck so far for my surface) sleep has become unreliable (in the sense that more than once after some hours i found the PC turned on again -apparently  by itself-  hung on the splash screen, hot and with the fan at full speed) so i couldn't use the old workaround anymore....i noticed though that cold boot problems while docked disappear if i connect my external monitor using the mini DP port of the surface instead of the one of the docking station...again this is less then ideal and not the behavior i expected when i shelled out about 2000$ (thanks euro/dollar conversion) for my surface but at least now i can safely shut down the pc and start it again (whoa! a pc that starts!).

    I'm just curious...is there ANYONE in the world that's been able to use the docking station without issues? i mean...is there a magical adapter or a magical cable that REALLY works?

    I returned my new VGA/DVI monitor (that I bought specifically to use with the docking station) & exchanged it for one with an HDMI port, also bought a Microsoft SP3 Miniport to HDMI Adapter and . . . as soon as the monitor arrives in a few days, I'll let you know.  ( I had done this a couple of weeks ago but the display I purchased turned out to be unavailable & I just found out the order was cancelled yesterday - so I ordered a different one that will be delivered soon).

    MIllerXFI who posted above reports this solution works.  Please note that the adapter is an 'SP3' Miniport to HDMI Adapter, it is specific to the SP3!  Don't buy just any MS adapter, like for an earlier version of the SP.

    PS - thanks for the heads up on the unit heating up when left running.  I tend to leave mine on all day in the docking station & shut down at night.  Perhaps I should shut down more often if I will be away from the desk for several hours.  If the docking station/start-up issue were solved, it will make that a lot easier!!!
