Surface Pro 3 stuck on Boot screen when docked

My SP3 boots fine and acts normally when not docked, but when I dock the computer and boot the computer hangs on the boot screen.  I see the SURFACE logo but nothing else.  I've let it run for hours with no resolution.  This is not a random thing, but happens on every boot.

Please do not ask me to check for latest updates... I've obviously checked for any and all updates, including optional updates.

I can boot the SP3 and then dock it and all peripherals work.  I've also tried booting while docked with no peripherals attached and it still locks on the boot screen.  I put another SP3 into the dock, and it boots fine.  It appears there is something corrupt with the SP3 having the problems, but there are no device problems or other issues that I can find.

A recent KB was posted with the fix:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3087655

My devices work great now.

It appears a recent firmware update has fixed the problem... it's at my fathers house, but he has not complained about it of late.

Hello jwu5062,

Given the issues you have described here, we recommend trying a reset and then installing all updates for the Surface again with your devices attached (i.e. monitor and Docking Station ). Before doing this, please backup any files you want to save, as a reset will erase your memory. You could consider doing this with external media such as sd cards, or you could use OneDrive to keep your files safe. This guide has more information about how to perform a reset. After the reset, search for all updates in Control Panel, even if your computer automatically finds and installs updates, check again in Control Panel after it is complete. This is how:

  • Open Desktop
  • Swipe from right and select Settings
  • Choose Control Panel
  • Click on Windows Update
  • Select Check for Updates
  • Restart your Surface and check for updates again.

If resetting and installing all updates does not resolve this issue, we recommend that you reach out to our Assisted Support team for further assistance. You can contact them through this site.

Please let us know if you have any other questions or problems.

Best Wishes,

Zack_T

    Quick update from me...

I was honestly skeptical, but I finally received a replacement dock from MS, and everything is now working as expected.

    Split from this thread.

    Hi All,

I appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us regarding numerous issues with the Surface Pro 3 and its Docking Station. I apologize for the poor experience you've had so far, and I'd like to ask those of you still experiencing issues to include a topography of your setup.

What adapter(s) are you using to connect the Docking Station to a monitor?

What monitor(s) are you using? Model and make?

Try manually checking for updates, and check the update history for any failed ones.

The more detailed information I can get (as to what you are trying to accomplish and what exactly you are experiencing), the better I am able to determine and get to the root cause of the issue.

I highly appreciate your cooperation in advance.

I am having similar issues on a Surface Pro 3 I got a week ago. Here are the description

    1. When docked, it reads plugged in not charging
    2. If the surface is off, I dock it & press the power button, it wouldn't come on. Even if I undock it after this and press the power button, it won't come on. I have to undock it, connect the power supply directly to the surface and then press the power button and it will come on.
    3. The display port on the dock doesn't work - i have a display port to DVI video adapter from StarTech.com - this adapter works when directly connected to the surface but not through the docking station.

My tablet is up to date with all windows updates. I don't see any updates available. My device manager reports all is well with the hardware.

Very frustrated with this product. When can we have a resolution? Is this a problem with the docking station?

    Thanks

    Max

I'll two bullets to this list:

    1. Mini DisplayPort from dock regularly drops out the video to my monitor setup, then (after a few seconds) the video is restored.  It can happen every few minutes.  It is worse from the Mini DisplayPort from the dock.  But it sometimes happens from the Mini DisplayPort from the SP3 itself.  A restart usually cures this.  But that is if #2 above doesn't strike (pressing the button, but the SP3 doesn't wake up).
    2. In the boot-up screen that displays the word "Surface," the background is red in color except for the area where Surface" is displayed and the where the spinning dots are displayed.  While this doesn't seem to have functional problems, it looks ridiculous to any onlookers, and they instantly become critical of this Microsoft product and Windows 8 (maybe I don't blame them).

    My setup is:

Surface Pro 3, from Lot 1432

    Dock Station, from Lot 1431

Dock Station output from Mini DisplayPort to an EVGA DisplayPort MultiStream Hub, which feeds 2x 1080p Dell 24" monitors.

All Windows updates and Firmware updates available from Windows Update installed as of 9/22/2014.

As much a fan I am of the SP3 when every works, it is excruciatingly frustrating when it doesn't.  It is certainly the buggiest PC I've every owned.
