Having used Windows in its various incarnations both professionally and domestically since NT 3.n, the mess that they've made with the Surface range dwarfs any previous blunders. I certainly can't previously recall a situation comparable to where the "updater
repair tool" is itself broken. Astonishing. And their lack of clarification of the Surface update situation is simply a disgrace.
I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a Surface of any model. There is simply no compelling reason to do so and many compelling reasons not to.
I'm not sure this is entirely fair. Problems like the December messed-up firmware are not a Microsoft exclusive. Apple has just announced they have a fix in the works for an iOS 7 problem that causes frequent crashes at random times that might be released
in March, maybe. This problem was there since the 7.0 developer betas apparently. If you look at some Apple forums, you can see users saying very similar things about Apple as people are saying here about Microsoft. The support is not good, it used to be better,
how is it possible it took more than four months to fix such a critical problem, etc., etc. What would you say if your Surface started rebooting frequently and randomly for four months? I guess a shortened battery life for a month would suddenly become the
least of your woes.
My Surface Pro 2 is by far the best device I've owned in a fairly long technically-oriented life and I would fully recommend it for both casual and professional use. I charge it overnight and use it all day long with several Modern apps, various Office applications,
audio and video Skype conferences, some graphics manipulations, even programming with Visual Studio with the occasional help of a second large monitor attached to it and usually I still have juice to watch the latest episode of one of my favourite TV serials
in the evening. It's fast, sharp and reliable (firmware glitches apart, but it's fixed for me now). So far I could not ask for more.
