System Firmware Update - 12/10/13 fails to install

Got the updates on todays patch Tuesday, but the firmware update failed to load. Rechecking for an update does not give the opportunity to try and reinstall.

Anyone else having this problem? I do notice that my telemetry driver is now loaded. so not sure what is going on here.

We are working through the holidays to deliver a fix for the small number of customers that have experience decreased battery life and booting/sleeping problems as a result of the December update. We took the update down to prevent additional customers from ending up in this state. All hardware failures, none of which are known to be caused by the December update, are being handled promptly through our warranty exchange policy.

The UEFI firmware that we released in the December update prevents some devices from entering sleep mode (and other low power states) properly during periods of inactivity. In order to release an updated version of the UEFI firmware we need to test the new version with the other drivers in the set to make sure we are not releasing yet another unknown state to customer machines. We certainly feel your pain and assure you that we are doing everything possible to make this right, as quickly as we can.

Greetings all,

We understand that the February Firmware Update has fixed the Battery gauge issue and the Firmware showing as failed. However we can see that there are some customers who are still experiencing issues with their Surface Pro 2 going into Sleep mode and Hibernate.

So we can better track those particular issues, we have decided to close this thread off. We encourage you to create a thread related to your Surface Pro 2 not going to sleep or not going into Hibernate. Please give as much detail as possible to your scenario.

We understand that the February Firmware update did not resolve the issue with waking from Sleep or Hibernate, as it was not intended to fix that particular issue. We are continuing to work to deliver a high quality solution. More updates will become available as this effort progresses.

The February update has resolved all issues for me. The firmware installed with no issues. Prior to this, I had all sorts of problems with the December firmware. Sleep and hibernate issues were rampant. The January update helped a bit, but the battery meter was always getting off calibration.

With the February update, all issues have been resolved and my Surface 2 128gb is working as it was prior to the December updates. Very solid and all is back to normal.

Hookah! Not only could I not get an Admin Command prompt on two tries on first reboot after installing 1/18/14 firmware update but when I went to reboot, I waited for about 5 min with a RESTARTING message and the pinwheel stuff before getting the wonderful new pastel BSOD. Something like DEVICE_POWER_STATE_FAILURE quickly flashed by. However, next reboot went O.K and I could finally get an Admin Command prompt to run a battery report. Instead of being at 41,437 or thereabouts, the Battery Report now tells me my capacity is 42,113 kWh (whereas design capacity is 42,002 kWh).

Thanks to MS for the firmware update at last (and jazzing up our dull lives).

EDIT: Another casualty of the firmware update is the Autocorrect setting on the Win8 Spell Checker. When it turned "Hookay" (1st word in post) into "Hookah," I finally had enough and turned it off in Settings. Kinda like firmware updates..... you never quite know how things are going to turn out with AutoCorrect at work.

Spending the day with a grandchild rather than a SP2, I could only read about all the updates coming through and wait to get home. Sure enough at 10 pm, the 4.2 Mb 1/18/2014 firmware update was waiting and installed with no problem.

Interestingly, some have reported the firmware update refuses to install unless the battery is fully charged. I was running at 52% charge on just the battery and the firmware update installed no problem (although it seemed to reboot or the screen went blank 3 times showing the Surface logo and an announcement an installation was taking place.

I had a failed 12/10/13 firmware update on that date back in December, ran Windows Update Troubleshooter, Disk Cleanup with System Files including Windows Update files included. My installation history was wiped clean, began receiving Windows Updates again, never offered the 10/24/13 update again (which succeed back in October, I think), and received a 12/10/13 hardware update on 12/11/13, and lots of updates after that including the 1/14/14 Patch Tuesday updates.

Since December, I had no problems with charging or battery status indicator but did have my SP2 come on overnight while supposedly shutdown on at least 2 different occasions, the most bizarre being after the January 14th patch Tuesday updates. My battery wear level is only about 2% after 16 full recharges but haven't fully recharged SP2 since 10/29/13 (lack of full recharge might affect accuracy of wear level estimate).

Have just installed the firmware update and not checked everything out. Have the curious problem right now that Windows key + X, then A does not generate an Admin Command prompt to run "powercfg /batteryreport". Will have to reboot and see....
