A month ago, I noticed the battery on my SP2 256GB (Canada) was depleteing while the device was supposed to be sleeping. I read the forums and set everything to hibernate and thought things were good. But the surface would crash once in a while coming out
of hibernation, and I'd lose everything that wasn't saved. The device vibrated when I touched the windows button, and I could see light along the edges of the screen, but it never displayed anything and I'd be forced to power down. Resetting the unit fixed
that.
I had read that the SP2 recovery image is missing drivers, so after resetting I checked the device manager. Sure enough, there was an unknown device (missing cover telemetry device - no idea what it does). I figured out how to manually install the October
firmware, but I learned the hard way that you have to do this before using Windows update or it won't work. I had to reinstall Windows again, then I got the telemetry device back and the unknown device was gone. At this point, it felt like a victory.
Now I notice that my SP2 may or may not hibernate unless I close the cover or push the power button (my power management settings). It seems it will not hibernate if the screen shuts off first or if it's set to sleep before hibernate. I don't know anymore
if it's just my imagination, but since the Dec 10 update it feels like the battery is draining more quickly when I use the machine.
I have never wanted to like a machine so badly in my life. Paying over $1,700 probably has something to do with it. To be fair, when this baby works, the SP2 totally rocks. These power issues are a real drag, though. I'm waiting for a patch like everyone
else.
Hi Laurence8,
I don't know if you've tried this...
- At Start screen, type "Power Button" and choose "change what the power buttons do".
- Once the dialog pops up, click "Change settings that are currently unavailable."
- Now scroll down the bottom of the dialog to Shut-down Settings.
- Tick Hibernate and Save Changes.
Now you can swipe in the Charms bar from the right and choose Hibernate from the Power settings.
