Got the updates on todays patch Tuesday, but the firmware update failed to load.  Rechecking for an update does not give the opportunity to try and reinstall.

Anyone else having this problem?  I do notice that my telemetry driver is now loaded. so not sure what is going on here.

Josh,

We are working through the holidays to deliver a fix for the small number of customers that have experience decreased battery life and booting/sleeping problems as a result of the December update.  We took the update down to prevent additional customers from ending up in this state. All hardware failures, none of which are known to be caused by the December update, are being handled promptly through our warranty exchange policy.

The UEFI firmware that we released in the December update prevents some devices from entering sleep mode (and other low power states) properly during periods of inactivity. In order to release an updated version of the UEFI firmware we need to test the new version with the other drivers in the set to make sure we are not releasing yet another unknown state to customer machines. We certainly feel your pain and assure you that we are doing everything possible to make this right, as quickly as we can.

Thank you,

Tim

Greetings all,

We understand that the February Firmware Update has fixed the Battery gauge issue and the Firmware showing as failed. However we can see that there are some customers who are still experiencing issues with their Surface Pro 2 going into Sleep mode and Hibernate.

So we can better track those particular issues, we have decided to close this thread off. We encourage you to create a thread related to your Surface Pro 2 not going to sleep or not going into Hibernate. Please give as much detail as possible to your scenario.

We understand that the February Firmware update did not resolve the issue with waking from Sleep or Hibernate, as it was not intended to fix that particular issue. We are continuing to work to deliver a high quality solution. More updates will become available as this effort progresses.

The February update has resolved all issues for me.  The firmware installed with no issues.  Prior to this, I had all sorts of problems with the December firmware.  Sleep and hibernate issues were rampant.  The January update helped a bit, but the battery meter was always getting off calibration.

With the February update, all issues have been resolved and my Surface 2 128gb is working as it was prior to the December updates.  Very solid and all is back to normal.

I have also been having problems with my Surface pro 2 battery meter saying that my tablet is not charging when plugged in and the battery level indicator staying stuck on 7% at first then at 21% after a hard reset. I only noticed this happening a couple of days ago and my tablet had already previously done the firmware update in question. If I have it plugged into the mains for a few hours then do a hard reset (hold volume up and power button in for 15 seconds) the battery meter shows 100% again, and if I need to charge my tablet once it has drained, it seems to charge properly only once before I have to do a hard reset again in order for it to show my true battery level.

My battery does seem to drain quicker than previously when not in use and my full charge capacity seems to have dropped somewhat.

    CHEMISTRY LION
    DESIGN CAPACITY 42,002 mWh
    FULL CHARGE CAPACITY 40,049 mWh
    CYCLE COUNT 15

Will wait and see how long the fix takes and also if it addresses these problems before considering returning it back to the store.

A pure guess is that many are affected. Which is why MSFT pulled the update.  I bet many haven't even noticed the strange behavior.  It is ironic that the morning of my installation of last week's Patch Tuesday I was just on a call that involved the Surface team.  At the end of the meeting, I said, "... notice anything strange with the battery meter after installing Patch Tuesday? ... ". Got nothing at that time.  Maybe different now.  Maybe Stevie B can better answer.

I only noticed the issue yesterday... and I use my surface pro 2 daily at work and then at home.  The worst part of it is that this issue (bad firmware) and the reset fix still is not on their surface service website.  If I hadn't seen one of the many articles yesterday about the firmware pull back, then I would have just assumed it was a battery problem.

Even a temporary fix should be put out there.  I understand that updating a webpage takes time and resources, especially for what they hope will be a transient problem, but my guess is that they'll be getting back a lot of sp2s with the advanced warranty exchange from users who didn't read this forum.  That's a lot of shipping charges and refurbed units which can't be sold at full price.  That has to be costing MS more than a website update.

I still think this is the best laptop/tablet out there.  I'm not giving it up, but there's no way I can advocate it to others until we see how quickly (or slowly!) a fix is made.  This is not a minor problem - the core functionality of the computer (turning/staying on?  using it as a portable device?) is now flawed.

Part of the implied promise when we bought these was that since MS is unifying the experience, taking control of the hardware and such, they would stand behind their products.  I'm not expecting a 24 hour fix, but I'm patient.  Others are not.
