I've just received this firmware update dated 24 Oct 2013 also, so decided to try installing it. A big, big mistake :-( My Surface Pro 2 128GB was starting spontaneously, but otherwise seemed to be working OK. When I saw the update offered I assumed
Microsoft was offering it to cure the issues that resulted from the December updates.
My Surface Pro 2 bluescreened on the restart after installing that update with this message:—
Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed
Error code 0xc0000185
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media, If you don't have any
installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC
manufacturer.
Press the Windows key to use a different operating system
Pressing the Windows key just results in the screen flashing between the bluescreen and "Please wait" - there is no different OS, of course.
I was able to get to the maintenance screen and did a refresh, but am still getting the same bluescreen. I note that the error code I'm seeing is different to what most others on this forum have reported, but others have reported the same code as me on other
forums.
As a Technet subscriber I have a Windows 8.1 RTM DVD. Connecting my external DVD drive lets me boot off the DVD, but the repair functions do not fix the issue. I didn't expect them to, as this is most likely a problem with the flashing of the firmware ROM.
But I thought it was worth a try, even if only to prove that function didn't fix the issue.
I was surprised to see, on the Reset Screen, two instances of W8.1, as follows:—
Reset your PC
Choose a target operating system
Windows Recovery
Environment
Windows 8.1
on volume 4
Windows 8.1
on volume 4
Why the duplication of W8.1 ??
Perhaps this is connected with the offer to use a different OS.
But when I attempted to run Reset I get the a message that due to a problem the unit could not be reset.
While I could reload W 8.1 from my DVD I suspect that will not cure the issue (and may affect the warranty on my 3 week old unit.)
Any suggestions for further repair attempts?
Thanks, Lionel Modra
