Surface Book 2 - Fans are noisy / loud after update

Hi,

I updated my surface book 2 (13 - i7 - 1050) today from the build 1809 to 1909 with all updates/firmware.

I have noticed that the behavior of the fans has changed.  My laptop got a lot noiser during load and even audible at idle.

Now the fans are extremely noisy/loud at load even when i'm changing the power modes (slider)

For example, on the previous build 1809, I was playing Witcher 3 in better performance mode and fan noise was perfectly acceptable.

Now regardless of the power mode, the fans are very loud.

I don't think i'm the only one with this problem.

The only solution found by the community is to restore a previous version ( build 1809 whose support will end at the end of the year).

I would like microsoft provide a real answer other than launching their diagnostic tool and i hope they will record it as an issue in order to follow the resolution. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4055398/surface-book-2-update-history

    Yep.  You would think Microsoft would actually test their software and firmware updates for their own hardware to make sure things don't get screwed up (part of the reason I bought the SB2) but it doesn't appear to be the case (iirc, this is the third or fourth time they have caused issues for Surface Book 2s (I managed to avoid one or two)).

    for me i'm software tester and this kind of stuff is like a punch directly in the face of every software creator that DOES test his software.

    one should think, that microsoft has the money to pay testers.. 

    ...on the other way... why spend money for that when they can just throw out the code to the "croud" and await the reactions...

    It's annoying indeed, not only can you not do any software that has any amount of graphics, but there is no word from any Microsoft Operator and it's been nearly a week after they've launched their firmware. This is the SECOND time their firmware update has caused the internal fans of the Surface Book2 to pop into LOUD or HYPER mode when they never did before.

    If any want to TEMPORARILY Fix your loud Fan problem on your surface book 2 you are experiencing since April's firmware update from Microsoft, restore a recovery point before it was loaded and make sure that Windows can't auto-update turn that setting off. 

    Don't do anything drastic and go wiping out past firmware updates by deleting them, mess with your voltages or registry. I deleted the firmware updates the first time through rather than recovery, held off the firmware update as long as WINDOWS would allow me and it ended up blue screening my SB2 making it not even operate and forced a lot of unnecessary work.  This is done from the update, wait and hope Microsoft doesn't hold the remedy out for too long.

    Cross-posting from another similar thread - exactly the same issue here. I pretty much just play World of Warcraft, and this has only started happening very recently. I've also noticed that even when the game is running, but I'm not focused on the game frame, the fans return to an expected level of noise (almost silent) after about 20-30 seconds.

    I've been through the Microsoft support funnel a few times now regarding this, and can confirm that none of these fixes have resolved the issue:

    • Any updates via Windows Update
    • Manually updating the Surface firmware (I tried version SurfaceBook2_Win10_18362_21.032.17273.0.msi)
    • Manually updating the NVIDIA drivers (I've got a GeForce 1050, tried updating to version 465.89)
    • Setting NVIDIA Control Panel global setting to "Integrated Graphics"
    • Setting power mode to any performance level (Battery Saver / Better / Best)

    The final option that I haven't yet tried is a full reset / recovery image, but as this issue just happens when gaming, I can't justify doing that on a machine I also use for work.

    I'm surprised that going back to an older firmware didn't fix the issue.  I would have been very surprised if any of the other things you tried fixed it.

    We are (again) at the mercy of Microsoft to issue a fix.  Last time (last year), it took about 3 months.  Let's hope it comes quicker this time.
