Surface Book 2 - Fans are noisy / loud after update

Hi,

I updated my surface book 2 (13 - i7 - 1050) today from the build 1809 to 1909 with all updates/firmware.

I have noticed that the behavior of the fans has changed.  My laptop got a lot noiser during load and even audible at idle.

Now the fans are extremely noisy/loud at load even when i'm changing the power modes (slider)

For example, on the previous build 1809, I was playing Witcher 3 in better performance mode and fan noise was perfectly acceptable.

Now regardless of the power mode, the fans are very loud.

I don't think i'm the only one with this problem.

Some examples :

The only solution found by the community is to restore a previous version ( build 1809 whose support will end at the end of the year).

I would like microsoft provide a real answer other than launching their diagnostic tool and i hope they will record it as an issue in order to follow the resolution. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4055398/surface-book-2-update-history

And if someone has an idea / solution I am interested ! Thx.

Regards,

Frederic

    Hi Frederic M,

Thank you for raising this concern of yours here in Microsoft Community. We're sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused you.

This kind of issue could be due to corrupted system files and to initially troubleshoot this issue, what I can recommend is to run the system file checker to check if there's any corrupted system file that keeps on looping around. To run the system file checker, kindly type Command Prompt on the search box next to the Windows icon and run it as administrator. Once done, type and enter sfc /scannow. Let it load, detect and repair those corrupted files. Once done, please run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and set the battery performance to recommendedand see if this helps.

In the event that the issue still exists, you can go to Settings>Updates & Security>Recovery and check if the option to go back to the older version is still available.

If this helps, feel free to mark this post as an answer. Otherwise, don't hesitate to respond to this thread if you need further assistance.

    Kind Regards,

    Crest_Z

    Hi,

Thanks for your answer but the only solution for me was to restore to a previous version.

I just want to share 2 videos i made in order to show the behavior of the fan after the update.

Same setting : Power mode better performance

    CPU : Default

    GPU : Default

After the update of may 2020 : fans are extremely loud when i focus the game frame but when i unfocus, fans become much silent and the game is still running fine - https://screenrec.com/share/

Restore version : When i restore my previous version -  build 1809- I  have no difference when i focus or unfocus the game frame - https://screenrec.com/share/z0SVMnpA3l

    Hope this help.

    Regards,

    Frederic.

You are lucky your fans are working. Mine havent worked in about two years since a firmware update broke them. Lid closed with surface dock. I have been through several replacements. I can probably fry an egg on top of my SB2. And all I'm doing is some light web surfing and emailing.

    Hi Frederic M,

Glad that you're able to sort it out by unfocusing the game  frame. Thank you for sharing this in the Community.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi Fredric,

I too, experience this same loud noisy fan after windows recent update to my Surface Book 2.  As you have done, I rolled back the updates and went to a previous restore point.

Unfortunately I couldn't keep from the window update forever and felt forced to install it. I rolled back to another restore point, this time it didn't translate so well and ended that Windows OS with a blue screen error and wouldn't load up at all.

I have since installed a brand new Windows 10 OS, reinstalled all new apps and video card driver to my Surface Book 2, and as well as the most recent windows update. And have the LOUD NOISY FANS still.  It's like the fan speeds have been increased by 10 surface book 2 isn't even running hot. Hope Microsoft looks into this and updates the remedy to their creation.
