Cross-posting from another similar thread - exactly the same issue here. I pretty much just play World of Warcraft, and this has only started happening very recently. I've also noticed that even when the game is running, but I'm not focused on the game frame, the fans return to an expected level of noise (almost silent) after about 20-30 seconds.
I've been through the Microsoft support funnel a few times now regarding this, and can confirm that none of these fixes have resolved the issue:
- Any updates via Windows Update
- Manually updating the Surface firmware (I tried version SurfaceBook2_Win10_18362_21.032.17273.0.msi)
- Manually updating the NVIDIA drivers (I've got a GeForce 1050, tried updating to version 465.89)
- Setting NVIDIA Control Panel global setting to "Integrated Graphics"
- Setting power mode to any performance level (Battery Saver / Better / Best)
The final option that I haven't yet tried is a full reset / recovery image, but as this issue just happens when gaming, I can't justify doing that on a machine I also use for work.
