Even so, do you charge an iPad via USB, I doubt it. As I mentioned before, it's not a simple software patch as the port has to be wired to receive power as well as provide it.
Outlook RT is coming in the 8.1 update anyway.
The iPad has a slave USB port, so it is possible to charge it via that port. But of course slave USB ports don't host things like flash drives or other USB peripherals. The Surface uses host USB ports in order to host things like flash drives and other
USB peripherals. On my Surface Pro I use the wifi when mobile, but I plug a 1GB Ethernet adapter into the USB port in my office to maximize the bandwidth connection to the Surface. That's useful because I do remote desktop connections from my desktop PC
into the Surface in order to run applications on the Surface during development.
The Surface has little use for a slave USB port for actual USB purposes. However, I'll agree that it might have been nice if they added a micro USB slave connector to the Surface that was for charging only.
The Surface primarily wants 12VDC for power/charging, and to the best of my recollection only 5VDC is available over USB. The higher the voltage, the more efficient the power. That's why notebooks tend toward 18VDC.
My suspicion is we'll see car adapters for both Surfaces like there are car adapters for notebook computers. It's not clear we'll see USB-based adapters because of the voltage issue. Both Surfaces likely want to charge their batteries from a 12VDC source.
Whether it could even be done efficiently from a 5VDC source (like USB) would require somebody's experimentation.
Since both Surfaces clearly prefer 12VDC, a car adapter would likely be reasonably straight-forward. There wouldn't be any need to covert the cars 12VDC supply to another voltage like with 18VDC notebooks. The electronics would mostly be just voltage spike
suppression to keep the Surface protected from the car's "very noisy" 12VDC supply.
