Another posting just made by somebody about hacking together a solar(?) charger seems to confirm this from a technical aspect. Apparently there is a wire in the power cable that "tells" the Surface which power adapter is in use so it won't over-draw the
smaller adapter.
I've yet to **personally** (I understand other people work differently) run into a problem of needing to charge my Pro in the car. What I could really on a rare occasion is a longer battery life. Most days it is not a problem. However I was recently at
two conferences taking notes using the pen and OneNote, and I was seriously doing things to try and milk the battery life. Minimal CPU. Backlight practically turned off. Etc.
I completely understand the problem between weight, size, and processing power / software compatibility with the Pro. I don't hold Microsoft accountable for not doing better. I am however thinking that a nice external 12VDC battery that could be plugged
into the power connector would be very nice for those rare instances when I need to milk the unit for all-day note taking.
In fact, it's actually been crossing my mind to maybe purchase an RT to use alongside the Pro with them sharing via SkyDrive. The Pro is necessary for when I have to do serious work that calls for real software. The RT might be nice for note taking and
other simpler tasks that will then share directly with the Pro and my other Windows systems.
