My surface pro 4 is currently losing around 20% charge overnight. This is a widely reported problem and I have tried all of the various suggested fixes - no improvement.

MICROSOFT - WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX THIS???

    Hi

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Surface Community. We apologized for the inconvenience on this matter. We don't want you to have this kind of experience. Just to have this isolated and provided a right resolution, we do have some few questions and suggestions below.

May we know the current OS version and build of your Surface Pro 4?

To find out which version and build of Windows you're using, select Start > Settings  > System  > About , then look under Windows Specifications to find your operating system version and OS build number.

How do you use your Surface Pro 4?

What application do you usually use?

Probably this is more on a hardware or a Software issue. You may consider trying the suggestions below and try each if that helps.

    Suggestion #1:

    1. Plug in your Surface.
    2. Select the search box in the taskbar, enter device manager, and in the search

    results, select Device Manager.

    1. Select the arrow next to the Batteries category.
    2. Double-tap or double-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery,

select the Driver tab, and select Uninstall > OK. (Or you can right-click

Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall.)

    1. Leave your Surface plugged in.
    2. After you remove the battery driver, install Surface and Windows updates. Go

to Settings, Updates, and check for updates manually and install any updates

    that are available.

    1. Restart your Surface and test to see if anything has changed.

    Suggestion #2:

Perform an In-place Upgrade with Windows 10. Ensure you are signed in or have administrator rights to do a repair install. Unplug all external peripherals except for the Mouse, Keyboard, and LAN cable before starting. Disable or uninstall any 3rd party Anti-Virus Program to prevent it from interfering with the upgrade.

    1. Select Download tool now, and select Run. You need to be an administrator to run this tool.
    2. On theLicense terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
    3. On the What do you want to do? page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
    4. After downloading and installing, the tool will walk you through how to set up Windows 10 on your PC. All Windows 10 editions are available when you select Windows 10,except for Enterprise edition.
    5. When Windows 10 is ready to install, you’ll see a recap of what you’ve chosen, and what will be kept through the upgrade. Select Change what to keep to set whether you would like to Keep personal files and apps, or Keep personal files only, or choose to keep Nothingduring the upgrade.
    6. Save and close any open apps and files you may be running, and when you’re ready, select Install.
    7. It might take some time to install Windows 10, and your PC will restart a few times. Make sure you don’t turn off your PC.

Please let me know if this helps. Or if we have progress, looking forward on your response.

    Regards,

    Edd

    Dear Edd

Thanks for your response. Answers below :

May we know the current OS version and build of your Surface Pro 4?

    Edition : Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

    Version : 1903

    Installed on : 31/08/2019

    CPU : Intel Core m3 @0.90GHz

    Skylake-U/Y 14nm Technology

    RAM : 4.00GB Dual Channel DDR3 (14-17-17-40)

Motherboard : Microsoft Corporation Surface Pro 4 (U3E1)

    BIOS Version : 108.2706.768

    Date : 18/04/2019

How do you use your Surface Pro 4?

Mostly just web browsing and email (nothing unusual)

What application do you usually use?

    Edge browser etc

I will try a clean re-install of Windows 10 Pro as per your suggestion.

Is there anything I should upgrade first e.g. BIOS firmware?

Can I also change the install language while I'm at it? This is a Spanish version of windows which I've changed to English but what is really annoying is it continually changes the keyboard back to the Spanish one (I don't know why) and there seems to be no way to stop this from happening e.g. it appears that the Spanish keyboard option cannot be removed.

Please advise whether there's anything else I should be aware of before proceeding with the re-install.

    Dear Edd

I have now performed a clean install of the Windows 10 May 2019 release and latest surface drivers. This was a complete wipe and reinstall - not an in-place upgrade.

Unfortunately this has made no difference whatsoever to the battery drain issue - yet again 17% charge lost overnight, which is typical.

    Sincerely

    Russ

    Dear Edgar

It has been 10 days now but I am still waiting for a reply?

I've seen lots of references to removing the Intel Management Engine as a possible fix for this battery drain problem. Do you recommend that I try this and what is the best method for removal?

    Regards

    Russ

    Hello RussellChandler1,

When said you Re-Install the OS, is it within Windows from Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC? If so, I highly recommend that you reset the Surface using a USB Recovery Image. You must have at least 16GB of USB Flash drive and it must be formatted to FAT32 prior to downloading the Recovery Image.

How to Download, Create and Use a USB recovery drive

    To download the Recovery Image:

    • You'll need a PC running Windows 7 or later.
    1. Visit the page at http://www.surface.com/support/warranty-service-and-recovery/downloadablerecoveryimage
    2. Sign in with your Microsoft Account (this is the email address we asked you for at the start of the call)
    3. From the list of Surface devices available, select the device that you need a recovery image for

Please note that while you will only be presented with devices that are currently registered on your account, you will also be presented with the option to get an image for a different type of device. If you try to use this option, you will be prompted to enter the serial number for that device 4. Download the recovery image using the button on the page 5. When the download bar pops up at the bottom of your screen, save the file in a location you will be able to find it.

     Format USB Drive:

    • Note: Formatting a recovery drive will erase anything that is already stored on your USB drive. Make sure to transfer any important data from your USB drive to another storage device before using it to create a Surface USB recovery drive.
    1. Insert your USB drive into the USB port of your PC.
    2. From the desktop, open File Explorer
    3. Tap and hold or right-click on the USB drive and choose Format
    4. Select FAT32 as the file system and enter a Volume label to name the USB drive, such as RECOVERY, and then tap or click Start
    5. Tap or click OK to erase the contents of the USB drive
    6. Tap or click OK when the format is complete

    Create a recovery drive:

    1. On your Surface or PC, open recovery image that you downloaded by double-clicking it or right click then select Extract and then Extract all.
    2. Select the USB drive you formatted earlier for the location and click Extract.

Use a USB recovery drive to reset your Surface:

    1. Turn the Surface off by pressing the power button
    2. Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port
    3. Press and hold the volume-down (-) rocker
    4. Press and release the power button
    5. When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-down (-) rocker
    6. Surface will start the recovery software on the USB recovery drive
    7. When prompted, choose your language options and keyboard layout
    8. Select Troubleshoot
    9. Select Recover from a Drive. Choose Fully Clean the Drive.
    10. If prompted, select Repartition the drives
    11. If prompted for BitLocker Key, tap Skip this Drive

    Regards,

    Karen
