Troubleshooting multiple monitors on a Surface Dock 2 (Surface Pro 7)

I'm trying to connect a new Pro 7 to two external monitors (Acer) through the Surface Dock. I'm using two USB C to HDMI cables. 

The Surface can detect the monitors and assigns them numbers (2 and 3) but the screens remain black and no numbers (or other display) shows up.

If I disconnect one of the monitors, the other one immediately turns on. It's quite bizarre.

I have updated the driver, downloaded firmware updates, disconnected/reconnected everything, and generally done everything that it says on the support page. 

I would be grateful if someone could let me know what I need to do to fix this.

    Thank you! You helped me get my setup working!

    It all depends on the HDMI to USBC brand used! In addiiton to the Insignia you recommended, I am also using Platinum brand (PT-PCCXHDMI6) from Best Buy and it also works. I was going to buy two of the Insignias but Best Buy was out.

    I bought the dock 2 specifically to be able to run the Surface screen + 2 external monitors. I had bought some HDMI to USBC on Amazon and could only get 1 screen up. While both were being read, the second screen was black so it never worked. I read on here that you need Microsoft HDMI to USBC but I was not going to shell out another $60 per cord.  Someone on here had the same problem that was fixed by buying a different kind of cord. 

    I am proud to say that I now have two external monitors attached to my Surface Dock 2 and they work great.

    Here is my setup:

    1. Surface Laptop 3
    2. Surface Dock 2
    3. External Monitor 1: Dell SE2719HR
    4. External Monitor 2: Dell SE2719H
    5. HDMI to USBC 1: Platinum USBC to HDMI (PT-PCCXHDMI6)
    6. HDMI to USBC 2: Insignia 6ft USBC to HDMI (NS-PCCXHDMI6)

    Some of you may be wondering why I have two different cords and monitors; the reason is Best Buy only had so many in stock so I had to make due with what I had. Thankfully my setup now works! Good luck, it is doable but I guess only certain brand of cables will work to have multiple monitors.

    Worked for me. Bought a Surface laptop three updated everything surface Dok2 did not work this morning its now working three monitors after all updates. I had the dock connected while updating, extra 2 monitors were unpluged

    Hi, Andrew-

    Very interesting.  By a "different circuit," do you mean an entirely different circuit from that which comes out of the breaker box? 

    Perhaps one could run an extension cord from another part of the house or something temporary plugged into an overhead light..  However, the office only has two circuits - one for the plugins and one for the lights.

    Looking forward to some help here.
