Troubleshooting multiple monitors on a Surface Dock 2 (Surface Pro 7)

I'm trying to connect a new Pro 7 to two external monitors (Acer) through the Surface Dock. I'm using two USB C to HDMI cables. 

The Surface can detect the monitors and assigns them numbers (2 and 3) but the screens remain black and no numbers (or other display) shows up.

If I disconnect one of the monitors, the other one immediately turns on. It's quite bizarre.

I have updated the driver, downloaded firmware updates, disconnected/reconnected everything, and generally done everything that it says on the support page. 

I would be grateful if someone could let me know what I need to do to fix this.

    The cables I am using are https://en.j5create.com/collections/usb-type-c-cables/products/jcc153g

    I couldnt find whether they are considered active or passive.  Interested in your results.

    Are your cables Active? I am using passive and this may affect it.

    Hi,

    Your problem sounds very close to mine - and you have nice HP monitors.

    The only thing I have had suggested is that the cables I use MUST be active, not passive.

    I have two arriving today. If this fixes it I will be happy.

    2 x AUD$65 active adapters USBC-HDMI. Almost like Apple now.

    If this makes a difference I'll post here.

    BTW I tried four different brand new Dock2. I still get intermittent black screen on one monitor and flickering at the top of the screen.

    I am having the same problem.

    I have a surface Pro 7 connected to Docking Station 2. I have a docking Station 1 at office that works fine.

    I called MS tech support and they told me to exchange my docking station. I did that and now I have one of my two monitors regularly displaying and the third is detected by I cannot display anything.

    I updated all the firmware.

    I am using USB-C to HDMI on brand new HP27f monitors.

    It is beyond frustrating.

    Any suggestions?

    Having the same issue in a school using both Surface Go2 and Surface Pro7 with the Surface Dock 2 connecting 2 external displays with HDMI to USB-C cables.

    The connection has just not been consistent since they were installed early September. Screens randomly going off or effecting the Windows 10 display settings and changing between extended or duplicated when the Surface is disconnected and reconnected.

    We have upgraded firmware, tried different cables and ports and two months on the situation has not improved. The result is that our teaching staff are losing faith in the technology and it is causing frustration as it is regularly eating into lesson time when the technology needs to be reliable and just work.

    These were purchased having reviewed the capability of the Surface dock 2 and feeling assured that they would deliver what we need and from past experience with the dock 1, that did not have such problems.
