Surface book: April 2020 firmware updates bricked my device

This morning my surface book downloaded some firmware updates and asked for me to restart my device.

(Here's the details on the update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4023488/surface-surface-book-update-history )

However, after the first restart, I find that the surface book is in a constant restart state. I cannot even force it to shut down or boot the UEFI menu.

This is exactly what it does:

Every 10 seconds or so, it will turn on, show me the "Surface" boot logo, and after 1 second immediately turns off. It does not even reach any Windows boot up sequence.

I found the following topic which advised doing a few steps but nothing works:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-book-stuck-in-continuous-restarting-loop/91bc5782-aabf-4555-847a-05b92c88da6d

Could I please get some advice on what to do or how to fix this?

Thank you

Update: Seems the common factor between everyone who is having the issue is that the secure boot is disabled (I.e. there is a 'red strip' shown with an unlock icon being shown).

Update 2: I have been told my Microsoft that they believe the fault has nothing to do with them. The high number of people who are in this thread with the exact same issue clearly shows that the fault is NOT ours. We are now looking to take legal action as this forced firmware update caused damage to our devices, for which we require compensation from Microsoft (a fix or a replacement free of charge).

For taking legal action and making complaints follow this link:https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/legal/arbitration/EU-ODR.aspx

    Hi Jen,

Was your Uefi unlocked? Ie Red Stripe with 'unlocked' Padlock when you startup?

Seems to SB 1's with unlocked Uefi boot.

That seems to be the trend here.

    Hey guys,

I just found out my SB stuck at starting screen. The circle never finishs loading and it automatically restarts.

I had windows update last week and it started acting like this since then.

    I have SB 1 (I think? Purchase in 2016...or 2017) i5 8GB.

I also tried all steps on support page, non has helped.

I really liked my SB :(

    Jen

Just a quick update - support has told me that the technical team is still looking into this issue. I'll let you know if I hear more.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I

think my cpu cnd gpu gre slightly different versions but appears to generally be Surfacebook 1, i7 with GPU so far.

Hopefully if theres enough people affected and/or they can replicate the problem then maybe theyll do something about it...

Please keep me (and everyone else) updated - im not keen on having a £2k+ paperweight :)

    Many thanks,

    Mark

    Hi,

Yes seems that way - I've been searching online and seems quite few people are just getting offered pay for replacements (which is obsurd considering it was their forced update that broke it).

The person I'm in contact with has told me that the issue has been raised with the technical team and they expect a reply next week sometime, but could not get any more precise than that unfortunately.

My specs are the same as yours i think, so you may be right:

    Surface book 1

    CPU: i7 (6600U)

    RAM: 8GB

    GPU: GTX 965m
