Surface Pro 6 Runs Slower in Dock

My Surface Pro 6 runs noticeably slower when it is connected to the dock. I have a dock at both home and work and see the same reduced performance in both places. This is not a new issue (unlikely related to a recent Win or other software update). Both docks were originally purchased for use with my previous Surface Pro 4 device.

Does anyone else notice such a pattern?

Any thoughts on what might be causing this and how to fix it?

  • Surface Pro 6, i7, 16gb
  • Win 10 10.0.17763 Build 17763
  • >300GB of 500GB hard drive are free

I don't see any obvious issues when looking at Task Manager. CPU, memory and internet are all lightly utilized.

Thanks much for any thoughts.

I never use MS-Edge or Outlook, so I believe these are not related.

BUT ever since I upgraded to Windows 10 1903 (May 2019 update, my current build is 18362.116) this problem has not appeared yet. I think I've been on the release version of 1903 since about 2 weeks.

Which version are you on right now?

MS isn't likely to respond here.

We could try to compare notes. I find that the problem varies. Often a reboot will make the computer run well. With time, I see degradation. Without hard data, I have sensed that the problem is amplified with an external keyboard (which I have stopped using at the office) and while using MS-Edge and Outlook.

    Any thoughts on your end?

That's what I noticed too - the performance problem comes in time, it's never out of the box after turning on Surface Pro. But what's weird, when it comes, sometimes it's not resolved even after system restart.

At first I was quite sure it's related to the wireless USB dongle from Logitech mouse I use. System was running much smoother after removing the dongle from the dock. But now I plugged it directly to the only USB port on my Surface Pro, and the performance problem is still here.

I've been playing with a variety of configurations with and without the dock attached. I notice that I never have problems when I boot without and don't use the dock. However, there are times when I have no problems while using the dock initially and then find that the performance degrades with time. I've tried plugging the monitor and my other USB accessories (keyboard and mouse) directly into the computer. This seems to work better at least for a while but nothing is conclusive.

It does not seem to be a very reliable configuration.
