Surface Pro 6 Runs Slower in Dock

My Surface Pro 6 runs noticeably slower when it is connected to the dock. I have a dock at both home and work and see the same reduced performance in both places. This is not a new issue (unlikely related to a recent Win or other software update). Both docks were originally purchased for use with my previous Surface Pro 4 device.

Does anyone else notice such a pattern?

Any thoughts on what might be causing this and how to fix it?

  • Surface Pro 6, i7, 16gb
  • Win 10 10.0.17763 Build 17763
  • >300GB of 500GB hard drive are free

I don't see any obvious issues when looking at Task Manager. CPU, memory and internet are all lightly utilized.

    I already tried removing all the peripherals from the dock with no success in this matter. This problem is so **** unique that it's really hard for a regular user to troubleshoot it. I have not seen new Surface Dock firmware for a long time now so I guess they don't give a **** anymore and probably some new kind of dock is under development.

    Have you tried sequential troubleshooting. Rather than disconnect the entire dock, move all the peripheral connections directly to the computer (including the ethernet connection transfer to WiFi) and see if you have the problem with just power coming through the dock. Sometimes (but not always), I have seen that this helps.

    Also, rebooting in this configuration (using the adapter just for power) seems to restore the speed for me.

    I do not understand why there are not many more with this same problem. I wonder if the two of us are using some unique software that has swapped a DLL or something. It's too significant and frequent a problem to be ignored.

    My enthusiasm was unjustified. Today a major slow down happened again and the only solution was to disconnect my SP6 from the Surface Dock.

    Microsoft released it this past Tuesday. You can wait for it to show up in WU or
    you can go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and
    select Update Now.

    Well, that's a hopeful thought. Perhaps the problem is fixed in the latest Windows version.

    I'm still on Version 1809 Build 17763. I'll update as soon as it becomes available for me (this computer is not on an insider track).
