Surface Laptop 3 display turns off when the brightness is at lowest setting

The laptop works fine when the brightness is at any level except the lowest setting. When it's set to low, it'll work for a minute or two, and then the screen turns black. It doesn't go to sleep because I can still hear videos playing in the background and I can pause/resume them using the spacebar, but the screen is completely black. To bring it back, I have to hit the power key to put it to sleep, and then again to wake it back up. 

This is especially annoying because I mainly use the laptop when in bed at night, so I always have it on the lowest brightness.

All software is up to date. Any recommendations?

    Same here it only happens when my brightness is low. There is no way to turn it back on other than hitting the power button.

    Hi, I own a Surface Laptop 3 13.5 too. I have the same problem here. Could you explain me step by step what you did ? It doesnt work for me, but I don't know if I'm doing the right thing !

    Install the intel app from MS store.  Go to system, power, then disable Display Power Savings.

    Have the same problem with 13" i7 16GB SKU.

    I turned off the auto brightness on settings control.  Didn't download any app from Intel.  It seems to work.  

    UPDATE: the systems setting doesn't work. it will extend the screen longer like a min or 2, but eventually blackout.

    The Intel app disabling the Display Power Savings does work. 

    Hope MS will release an update to fix this, as auto dimming can be useful.

    I seem to have the same problem which I can explain in detail if needed. I own an i5 13.5-inch 68gb RAM black surface laptop and the screen seems to blackout while watching youtube videos or just typing on documents. 

    The reason why I'm leaving this comment is for another related issue that hasn't been discussed here yet. That is after the screen blacks out I close the lid and turn then lift it back up and as I do, there is a loud popping noise that comes from the laptop. This really concerns me and I haven't had the chance to discuss with a Microsoft customer service yet, I will when I get the chance but right now they are closed. I hope this helps someone out.
