Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

Thanks,

Josh

Hi

I suspect devices racing to awaken are interfering with each other. Leaving WiFi on during sleep (settings > system>power & sleep), which I set yesterday,  seems to have fixed the black screen on "awakening" problem I have been having on my surface pro 4. (Of course sleep, under the balanced power scheme, consumed up to 23% of battery capacity this way).

WiFi set off during sleep used to reconnect after sign-in and startup. Updates installed in January changed this so that it was on by that time.

Since I've still gotten the MTConfig errors sometimes and also distributed COM errors and warnings on Kernel-PnP: WUDFRd failing to load for device ... and ACPI: EC returned data when none was requested, that were also being reported in the 'System' event log, inelegance remains. However, my screen isn't black and I don't have to force shutdown and reboot to wake the Surface.

Hope this helps

K

Try a two button reset

Step 1: Swipe in from the right and tap or click Settings, tap or click Power, and then tap or click Shut down to shut down Surface. If you can’t shut down Surface normally, press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds.

Step 2: After Surface turns off, press and hold volume-up button and the power button on your Surface at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.

Step 3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.

Step 4: Press and release the power button again to turn your Surface back on.

if this does not work, you will need to exchange it.

if your device consistently fails, you should take it back to the store and demonstrate it to the MS employee.

they should either correct it or exchange it for a new machine.

that is exactly what happened in my case back in November 2015.  my replacement SP4 with all updates applied has performed superbly and I am actually enjoying using the device.

again, my advise for those having serious issues with SP4, get it replaced until you get a functioning unit.

let MS find and fix the defects and/or problems.  otherwise, we are going to be hit with same problems with their SP5 and SP6....  and we do not want that!

The problem with these type of suggestions -  "just get a replacement. or just do a full Reset from an ISO" is that...do you understand how much time it takes to do this and then reinstall all our software from scratch?  I've already done this 4 times since October -  not doing it again except so that I can sell this thing.  Yeah it's a great "form factor" - sort of - but it has so many usability issues. Very poor wireless driver, horrible trackpad (way to sensitive on the left, not sensitive on the right, so slippery you can't click without sliding the cursor, goes haywire if you leave two fingers resting on it for too long - all mitigated by simply  turning off all the useful features!), fatiguing screen, subpar battery life, still won't wake from sleep after closing the keyboard cover half the time, spacebar that doesn't register hits often, Edge doesn't work fully with half the internet, Windows Mail app frequently unable to connect to Outlook mail servers for no reason, graphics performance with the Surface Dock and external monitors is a NIGHTMARE!, This is LITERALLY like voluntarily going back to Windows 95 reliability, just stupid.

I'm sure that most people don't notice this stuff because they use the SP4 to sit in Starbucks and browse the web or check email - but for someone wanting real productivity, well, it's just pathetic. My 7 year old Dell with Vista is better. Learned my $2000 lesson and going back to my 2013 MacBook, which is now dated tech and lacks some of the nice features of Win 10 - but as they say... it really does Just Work, and beautifully. Even though it's a lower res screen, after using the SP4 for a while, it is literally like a breath of fresh air for my eyes.  With Redstone coming up - be real - it's going to introduce all sorts of problems and the SP4 is going to be a disaster for yet another year. Then they'll introduce the SP5, which, of course, "fixes" the SP4 so they get your money all over again. Nope, not doing this anymore.
