I've just had to update the firmware in another device that had a Samsung 840EVO SSD because they had a serious firmware bug with it. Out of curiosity I tested the Samsung drive in my Surface Pro 3 and it looks like it has exactly the same issue (the SP3 drive is closely related to the 840 series I believe, but an OEM version.
The test is simple, just look at the read rate across the drive. Older data (OS, installed apps) suffered from terrible read performance after a month or so. Newly written data is fine.
As you can see, much of the drive is down to 50MB/s now. It should be a fairly level line right the way across at about 350+MB/s. This test was run with AC power connected and nothing else running.
If this is the same issue as the 840EVO, the good news is it can be corrected with a firmware update and refresh of the data. Bad news would of course be Microsoft need to look into it first, then get the Samsung engineers looking into it.
Perhaps some other people could run the test too, and post results. Remember the drive needs to be a month or more old, so that the data can have been sitting there only being read during that time.
Further details of the bug and the fix that Samsung released can be found here:

I really hope MS fixes this issue. I am holding my money until this issue is fixed.
Several SP3 users in Korean SP3 forum actually contacted MS to address this issue.
Many users believe their voice was not loud enough to be heard to the engineers or
upper management.
Samsung also seems to be ignoring this issue as well. I am not expert of any kind, but
it is OK to assume that Samsung can easily tweak the updated firmware for the SDD.
Is there any official announcement acknowledging this issue from Microsoft?
Dr.Platypoohs,
It's really not worth holding back buying the SP3 over this issue. It is without doubt the best ultrabook tablet you can get and that I've ever owned. It is just a fantastic device. This 'possible' SSD issue does not involve data loss and unless you go looking for it you might not even notice any real world performance loss. You might even get one with the Hynix SSD instead and if you look back a few pages you will see that has fantastic performance!
The firmware can be updated, doing DiskFresh might solve it, if it is really a problem at all, get the SP3 and enjoy it. I have not a single thought of returning mine even if I could.
As for official acknowledgement, nothing so far. I'm going to have to try and get some news sites interested to make anything happen I think. And I shall be quite content to hear that a real engineer on the Surface team has investigated and decided that there is no real problem, I just don't want to hear it from the marketing department!
David,
Thank you for the detailed reply. To be honest, I also think SP3 is one of the best convertible tablet/laptop in the market. What I needed was simple advice from people who are actually using it. I have decided to buy SP3.
It would be great to get some help from IT news sites with benchmarking capabilities. Marketing department assumes customers do not understand the device enough or install malwares slowing the system. Yes, it would be great to hear from actual engineers in MS.
Hello DavidN,
Thank you for your feedback on this issue with the SSD read rate of Samsung SSDs in the Surface Pro 3. We have already contacted you and other posters on this thread to ask for additional details, and we appreciate that further information and feedback.
We are currently working with our partners on addressing this issue. We greatly value your patience and your continued participation in the Community.
