Handwriting panel and pen!

Thank you for coming back to us. To configure handwriting on a Surface Laptop 5 running Windows 11, you can customize the pen settings to work with your PC. You can choose which hand you write with, or what your PC does when you click, double-click, or hold down the pen’s shortcut button. To change settings, select Start > Settings > Devices > Pen and Windows ink. Select a setting box, and then choose an option. For example, under Click once, choose Windows Ink Workspace from the first box, then choose what part of the workspace you want to open from the second box.

Configuring the handwriting features on your Surface Laptop 5 running Windows 11 is straightforward. Let’s explore the steps:

1. Open the Handwriting Panel:
   • If you have a tablet device with a touchscreen, follow these steps:
     • Tap the text field where you want to enter text using your pen.
     • The handwriting panel or touch keyboard (if previously closed) will automatically open.

2. Open the Touch Keyboard:
   • Click on the touch keyboard icon in the taskbar (it looks like a keyboard).
   • If you’re not already using the handwriting panel layout, switch to it:
     • Click the settings icon (a rectangle with a cog) within the touch keyboard.
     • Select the handwriting option (depicted as a rectangle with a pen).
     • The keyboard will now switch to the handwriting pane.
3. Enable or Disable Handwriting:
   • To enable handwriting input, follow these steps:
     • Open Settings (press Win+I).
     • Navigate to Bluetooth & devices on the left side.
     • Click on Pen & Windows Ink on the right side.
     • Expand the “Use your handwriting to enter text” option.
     • Toggle the button to the on position.

Thank you for your reply! I have just tried to update the settings on my daughters laptop however there is no ‘Configure handwriting recognition’ option under the ‘handwriting’ section!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. To restore the handwriting panel to its maximum size on your daughter’s Surface Laptop 5, follow these steps:

1. Open the Settings app by clicking on the Start menu and selecting the gear icon.
2. Click on "Bluetooth and Devices."
3. Click on "Pen & Windows Ink."
4. Scroll down to the "Handwriting" section and click on "Configure handwriting recognition."
5. In the handwriting panel, click on the three dots in the top right corner.
6. Select "Settings."
7. Under "Handwriting panel size," select "Use the largest available."
8. Close the settings window and try using the pen again.

This should bring up the handwriting panel in maximum size when you click once with the pen.
