Surface Pro 4 Bulging Battery / Screen. 3 1/2 years old.

So, like many others on this forum, we have a Surface Pro 4, in which the battery has decided to self-destruct, destroying a £1,700 machine.

The screen hasn't popped off, but the battery has swollen enough to prevent the hinge from opening as it should and for the glass on the front to be very distorted, and it registers random screen input, all the while running hotter than the central heating.

I've spoken to support. They unhelpfully told me that because my warranty is up, I would have to pay several hundred pounds (£333) to replace the machine with a refurbished unit. To me, this is completely unacceptable. These devices are clearly flawed by design. This issue is too wide spread for it to be a coincidence. The batteries used in these devices are obviously flawed, and when I suggested as such, Sean L, the person dealing with my case, stopped responding (A few days after that, I wrote to Microsoft's twitter support who confirmed that the case had been closed. Thanks Sean L.)

If the device is dangerous (as suggested by the agent who I spoke to on the phone in the first instance) and it does catch fire while we are away this summer, and it subsequently burns down a multi-million pound Cambridge University building? What then, Microsoft? You'll wish you'd just replaced it then, won't you.

    I'll join the club, Surface Pro 4, just over 5 years old. Yellow streak down screen and bulge so the smart keyboard doesn't shut properly.

    Contacted Microsoft Support and after some back and forth with emails I got this response.

    "Unfortunately, you should stop using the device also there is no repair options for it. I know this is not the answer you were looking for, however, regarding this matter we cannot provide you with any help."

    A virtual door in the face!

    Hello,

    So are we really not given any replacement option. My surface pro was a gift and sat on shelf for a couple years just using a few times to play with the pen technology, Then I finally started using the surface pro 4 last year during pandemic a lot and then within a few months the battery bulged out and screen started bending. I continue to use it because its the only computer we have left and funds are super tight right now. So I just upgraded renter insurance in case there is any fire caused by the unit.

    Does anyone know how to get Microsoft to replace this?

    I think they should be forced to recall this hardware like a car manufacturer. I'm interested in starting the class action lawsuit if this doesn't get solved because there appear to be thousands of units impacted by this, costing us consumers millions of dollars.

    Please let me know how to get this fixed by Microsoft and whatever you do - NEVER BUY MICROSOFT HARDWARE AGAIN. GARBAGE!

    For all of those on this forum. We can agree the surface pro 4 battery problem (maybe even the device itself) and the way Microsoft is dealing with it suck.

    After fighting them for several months I realised I was getting nowhere and started looking for (self) repair options. I landed on a repair shop in Amsterdam that replaces the battery for 100 EUR. I just had it done last week, and first impressions are excellent. I got the unit back within a couple of days and it seems to work fine. Will post again after a few months of testing it out, but wanted to share it for those that happen to live in the Netherlands or plan to visit someday.

    It's not ideal. But for 100 EUR i figured it was better than throwing it out or living with a firehazard in the house.
