Surface Pro 4 Bulging Battery / Screen. 3 1/2 years old.

Same issue here.  Bottom right side of the screen is bulging away from the frame.  Didn't an issue like this cause Samsung to replace everyone's phones and then pull them off the market for a while?  I can't fathom why this isn't a class action at this point.  

Sure, it's a four year old system but I've had laptops last far longer than that with no issues.  Moreover, a swelling battery is actually dangerous.  Microsoft, if you're listening, this is a problem that is going to blow up in your face if you don't do something soon.  

On a side note, UbreakIfix can repair this for about $150.  That's my current course of action.

I have bought my surface pro 4 in March 2016 and just two days ago I realized bulging at lower left edge of the screen. I contacted Microsoft support and at the beginning they told me because my two years of warranty is over I have to pay around 488 CHF for repairing my surface pro 4. After I told them that I have read about this issue in internet and this is one of the common problems for surface pro 4, they suggested me to change my surface pro 4 with surface pro 5 with the same specification for the same price (so generous!!), although this was not my fault. I thought the offered surface pro 5 is a brand new with 2 years warranty, so I have replied to their email to check if the offered surface pro 5 is a new device. I haven't heard from them and after one day I called them again and they told me the surface pro 5 is not new and it has warranty just for 90 days!!!

That was embarrassing; you pay 1400 CHF and get a device which does not worth of buying!! If I will pay the offered amount is there any guaranty this bulging does not happen again? Of course not, if they could do so, they could produce their products better. I could use my other laptops for 6-7 years and after that time there was no problem with the system. But this time, I paid even more and I could use my laptop less than 4 years.

My conclusion: I will never buy Microsoft laptops anymore and suggest to anybody else to do the same. They are not worth buying and they just have fancy style and appearance. In addition to that, Microsoft support center is not at all helpful and is really awful!

Almost same problem:   Just found out my Surface Laptop 3 also has a defective battery.   Out of warranty.  Tried to have battery replaced but repair people told me the only way to replace  would destroy laptop. Called microsoft.  Agreed that surface laptop batteries cannot  be replaced and that I probably  “overcharged” the battery.  (Didn’t think that was possible). Offered to sell me a refurbished surface for $500 as a solution to their defective product.   Um.  No thanks.  I’ve always tried to support Microsoft products but this is the end of the line. My husband’s 2012 MacBook still works perfectly so I’ll probably just use that.    Crazy.

I also have a Surface Pro 4 that has the screen popping off and display distortion where the battery has decided to bulge and overheat.

I cannot believe that I am being asked to pay £333ex VAT to get a refurbished unit because of a production fault with the battery.

I intended using this like other devices I buy for many years, not have to pay a Microsoft to swap out a product which is clearly a danger to the user years before it would normally stop working and then to get a refurbished unit with unknown specifications.

I travel a lot by plane and I suspect that there is not an airline in existence that would allow me to take my Surface with me on my travels. 

Why am I paying Microsoft to put something right that is clearly their fault?

Here's an excerpt from the Microsoft Technician who if you read between the lines is saying "You need to keep your dangerous device until you agree to pay us to fix it and you agree to our terms"

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your response. We have determined that your Surface Pro 4 with the serial number S/N: xxxxxxxxxxrequires a replacement which is not covered by warranty.

In order for us to proceed with this replacement, please reply to this email to indicate your written agreement to the Out of Warranty replacement fee of 333 GBP, plus local tax if applicable. Once we have your agreement on these charges, we’ll complete the replacement process which consists on the below:

1.       Creation of the Out of Warranty exchange order for the faulty Unit;

2.       Once the exchange order is triggered, the replacement device (a high quality refurbished unit) will be shipped with a 90 day repair warranty.

3.       The invoice will be created by our billing department and it will be sent to customer via email along with the payment instructions.

Lets hope it doesn't catch fire and burn my office down or explode on a plane.

I too have just discovered i have the same issue. My machine was purchased 2 years past in February. Hugely disappointing and my MAC white book form 2008 still runs fine as does my Mac Air 2014 biut until now I thought the surface device was a superior product, so much so I rolled them out to my engineers on my team. If Microsoft do not do the right thing not a single further product will be introduced in our business, from experience it seems Apple product support, particularly out of warranty, is way above this garbage.

Has anybody had any joy getting an FOC fix out of warranty.
