sound keeps muting

I was listening to a song on the tablet and then went back to the start page to do something else and all of a sudden I thought my song stopped playing but it hadn't. The sound muted itself.

Then I set up the tablet so I could view my facebook pictures on the tablet. As I was looking at them, I noticed it also showed some videos I uploaded to facebook so I wanted to see what they looked like on the tablet but there was no sound. I thought it was because they were from facebook but I checked the speaker and noticed the sound got muted again.

Why does this happen and is it suppose to happen?

Greetings everyone,

Regarding the issue of having the sound mute randomly, and in TH IT's case, unmute, please get in touch with the Surface Technical Support to exchange the Touch / Type Cover. We're still investigating the issue, however it appears that the cover may be the issue.

You can do the exchange yourself here: http://myservice.surface.com or by contacting our Technical support team here: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/support/contact-us/.

Please let us know if the exchanged Touch Cover / Type Cover resolves the issue for you.

I was holding out hope and was encouraged when I saw this update. Alas I tried to play an album in Xbox Music and the first song played ok and then the sound dropped on the second song. Skipping forward to the third song and then back to the second "problem" song fixes it and the song plays normally. So no audio file issues there. I do not have a touch cover so that is obviously not the issue. It is not a standby or power management issue as this happens even when I am connected to a power outlet or a full battery charge.

This issue has plagued me from launch date till now and I only get people telling me about the cover despite letting them know I do not use one. It is also not a power or standby issue because it happens on song #2 (and every other song - it goes back and forth i.e. high and low as the songs switch). It is not a streaming issue as this happens whether or not I am streaming or playing local files. I am miles away from the volume rocker and nope am not accidentally touching it.

    Help anyone???

Ok everybody. Microsoft's latest patch is supposed to fix the random muting problem. Go download it right away.

    From http://www.wpcentral.com/microsoft-roles-out-flash-firmware-update-windows-8-surface:

"In addition, for those with a Surface Pro and RT who also got theMarch firmware update, you should notice a few other improvements for your user experience, including:

    • Fixes to Wi-Fi reliability allowing for better roaming and improvements to "Limited" connectivity scenarios.
    • Resolves issues with integrated volume button.
    • Improved Type and Touch cover typing experience on soft surfaces and when devices and keyboard are lying flat.
    • Resolves issue with random muting.
    • Trackpad performance improvements."

Let us know if this fixes your muting problem.
