Manage Copilot Chat availability

Completed

Copilot Chat is often the first Copilot capability schools enable because it provides immediate value without additional licensing cost. Administrators enable Copilot Chat using tenant‑level settings in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

When enabling Copilot Chat, review student access requirements carefully. Microsoft provides configuration options that allow schools to enable or restrict Copilot Chat for students based on age and institutional policy.

Copilot Chat is available for students aged 13 and older when their school enables access and required student attributes are configured. For student access, verify that age-group data is managed in Microsoft Entra ID, using School Data Sync, CSV-based updates, or another identity-management process approved by the institution.

After configuration, validate the experience by signing in with a test educator account and confirming Copilot Chat is available. If student access is enabled, validate with an eligible student test account aged 13 or older and confirm the experience matches institutional policy before broader rollout.
