Unable to Open or Save files Office 2003 Basic Edition

After purchasing new computer, I loaded my old software Office 2003 basic edition onto Windows 11. It loaded fine, however, when trying to open or save a file in either Word or Excel the program stalls and the hour glass appears. I click within the Save or Open dialog box and receive a error that says Open(Not Responding) or Save(Not Responding).

I used this old software without issue in Windows 10, so not sure what is happening? I realize the software is quite dated, but I don't use it often enough to really justify upgrading and I like the software. I would like to continue to use if possible.

Hope someone can help me.

Hello, I had exactly same problem on my laptop after updating from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

Clean all the junk, I am using CCleaner for that.

Restart your computer

Use 'Run' command

write: winword /a (I think it opens without addins) It worked for me, good luck.:)

I'm having the exact same problem. Did Microsoft offer a solution? I installed the 2003 office software from the original disks and downloaded and installed all of the updates. Excel 2003 and Word 2003 doesn't see my hard drive.

I cannot seem to get it to work and the person below that left a comment didn't make sense to me, because I bought a new computer and there should be no need to clean anything. So far nobody has any solution.

Yes, the program worked fine with Windows 10 and I wish I would have never upgraded to Windows 11. If you find anything, please let me know. Thanks.

I thought i am the only one having this problem, and just saw this just now.
searching on so many platform already for answers but nothing useful. most of them gived the solution for excel 2013 or newer version, seems nobody care on this outdated 2003 version anymore

the funny thing : we have 2 laptops at home, both using windows 11 on the same brand MSI.
one no problem to use the excel 2003, no error happen at all
but the other one have the exact problem as above, cannot open / save as.. and will stuck forever waiting.

really hope if someone can help

Having same issue with Word and Excel 2003. I can save an existing document but cannot "save" or "save as" a new document. Workaround for me is to go to File Explorer, copy an existing file, modify that file which can then be saved. Other information - I have two computers running Windows 11 and Office 2003. One box works fine and the other exhibits the "save"/"save as" issue. Here are the specs:

I'm sorry to say this, but the one drive file structure is the reason for the crashes. Uninstalling onedrive via the add and remove programs menu will completely eliminate the office 2003 crashes. Until onedrive is fixed with better support for legacy programs, this is the only remedy that I am aware of.

Not necessary to uninstall OneDrive - just disable it for the users who want to use Office 200x - On my machine the OneDrive was set up as the repository for all my documents so I found a way on the internet to stop that from happening and the problem was 'fixed' without modifying the machine other than telling it to not use OneDrive. I had not found anyone with the problem with Office 2003 who indicated OneDrive was the problem before I made my 'find' by accident. So I reported it here - suddenly I find there are several who had discovered the 'problem' with OneDrive previously. None of these came up prior to this when I was looking for the answer. I wonder why?

Its related to the fact that in Win11 the default "Documents" folder is on OneDrive in the cloud. If you remove the setting (right click OneDrive icon and select Settings, you can unselect the files that are located on OneDrive). Then you can open Word or Excel and go to settings and change the default file location to something on your physical computer instead of your Documents folder on OneDrive -- hope that helps, Pat

The folks that identified OneDrive as the culprit were absolutely correct. I removed OneDrive and all dialogs in my Office 2003 install on Windows 11 immediately began functioning perfectly. Thanks to those who keep digging thereby keeping the rest of us productive.

I also have the save/save as problem when loaded windows 11 I have removed all files relating to office 2003 and reinstalled also ran repair many times and have had no success if this is such a problem why doesn't microsoft add patch or does microsoft want you to buy newest version on the monthly pay online version. if anyone can find a patch I and a lot of other people would be very happy

This AutoHotKey script with a looping timer every 11 seconds has resolved the issue completely for me.

Stop syncing everything

Select the OneDrive cloud icon from the taskbar or menubar, select the gear icon. then select Settings or Preferences.

Select then Settings again and go to the Account tab.

Select Unlink this PC.

I did this and Bingo everything started working properly again:)

I tried several of the methods identified by others, but they did not work for me. I, too, had used Office 2003 satisfactorily on Windows 10 Home. I bought a new computer (a 17" HP with intel i5, 1 T SSD and 16 G of ram) running Windows 11 home. I found that Word and Excel both had problems with hanging on open and save as.

I found a work around was to locate a saved file from previous work, copy the file and rename it, delete the contents, and load the new content for the file either by typing it in or copying it from a text editor. That way save would work as long as I didn't press save as. I resigned myself to doing that until I could find a solution.

Shortly after that I noticed that OneDrive was set up to receive my files from <documents>. Then I discovered that all of my files were being pointed to the cloud in Windows 11. I went onto the internet to find out how to stop that - I am one of those people who does not want to put my stuff on the cloud. I found out how to do it and stopped OneDrive from being the repository then moved everything that was saved there off the OneDrive, back to the c: drive.

I went back to work and lo and behold Word 2003 and Excel 2003 are now able to operate correctly in both open and save as. It appears that somehow, the presence of OneDrive was impeding these operations. And now they are working as expected and as they had on Windows 10 previously.

I am sure that someone else can explain this and I for one am hard pressed to imagine that MS is unaware of it.

This information is very helpful, but, did you uninstall open drive or did you just shut it down. I've read some other people have uninstalled it and I'm not comfortable doing that.

Deloris Wing, you just made my day!! I followed what you suggested and actually unlinked OneDrive from my device. No need to delete OneDrive either, just unlink (that is what Microsoft calls it) and the problem is solved. I now can use the software and save and open files as I had it the past!! Lovely.

I have copied the instructions from Microsoft to do this and they are as follows:

Unlink OneDrive You won't lose files or data by unlinking OneDrive from your computer. You can always access your files by signing in to OneDrive.com. Windows Open OneDrive settings (select the OneDrive cloud icon in your notification area, and then select the OneDrive Help and Settings icon then Settings.) Go to the Account tab. Select Unlink this PC.

I unlinked Onedrive on my windows 11 laptop and lo and behold my Microsoft Office 2003 software (Excel and Word) now works as good as new.

I don't know anything more than that (like repercussions for unlinking onedrive), but, I'm a lot happier now. thank you Deloris Wing and everyone else on this chain. It only took me 8 months to get it resolved 😊.

So thanks to Deloris Wing, the cause of problem has already been identified as ‘Documents being saved to OneDrive’ The fix is quite simple. You don’t have to Uninstall or Unlink OneDrive. In windows explorer, Right click OneDrive, then select OneDrive (Cloud) and Settings. Under the Heading ‘Sync and Backup’, select ‘Manage Backup’ Slide ‘Documents’ toggle switch to ‘Off ‘ (left) and Hey Presto! The problem is fixed. Here, you can also switch off any other folders that you don’t want to save to OneDrive. Incidentally, I had come up with the same work around as mentioned by Deloris Wing.

Deloris, Excellent Diagnosis on Word and Windows 11 One Drive! I had the same problem with Word 97 and Word 2003 installed on my Windows 11 laptop; I could load a Word document ok but when I went to save it or just save, the circle came on and the Word program stalled continuously. However, I learned there are several ways to stop One Drive from being active so I chose to uninstall the program on the Microsoft website; the website said I could always get to my files on One Cloud by logging in so I will do that soon to remove my files from cloud; I'm also one of those persons that do not like to store any of my files on a cloud. Once I uninstalled One Drive from my laptop (after copying and pasting the files in One Drive to a folder on my C Drive - I started Word, created some documents and saved them without any complications - straight on! Thanks so much Deloris for the advice to stop One Drive from being operational to allow Word to function properly - Joe!

One Answer - simple for some, difficult for others. I have done this on 2 machines.
1. Back up all of your personal files however is best for you.
2. Format your hard drive.
3. Install Windows 10.
4. Install MS Office 2003, update it and make sure it works.
5. Upgrade to Windows 11. MS Office will no longer default to the same folder when you choose "Save As".
6. Enjoy! ;)

This rather general answer doesn't apply to the issue at hand, which also has already been traced down to the registry setting "UserSyncRoots". Also, Office 2003, at least Word, Excel and PowerPoint, perfectly work on Windows 11.

Hi stephon110, as I much appreciate your suggestions provided, the intent of this discussion is to try to keep office 2003 alive and working (we all have our own reasons for not upgrading after 20+ years).

The current issue is a registry entry which causes the office popup window for "open" and "save as" to crash. By deleting the registry entry, it allows OneDrive and Office to work together without crashing. (See https://github.com/oneapi-src/oneTBB/issues/665)

Even though the above is a partial solution, the remaining issue is that the registry entry reinserts itself on every PC reboot/awakening. If you have a workaround for this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I found solution ~ (with MS Tech help) !

! You must UnSynch One-Drive DeskTop, you may leave One Drive documents synched.

Right click little cloud in lower right task bar, open one drive, select settings, sync and back up, manage back up, de-select desktop.

This solution just totally saved me! Previously, I had a solution with AutoHotKey that deleted the registry key "UserSyncRoots" regularly, but that doesn't work anymore with the latest version of AutoHotKey for some reason.

I now just disabled all standard backup folders, both in my personal OneDrive and in my OneDrive for Business. And although that registry key is still there, the Open/Save dialogs in Word 2003 work perfectly now! Thank you a million times for having shared your solution here! Sorry fellow office 2003 buddy, I should have logged in to mention it too. Just disable clouding your desktop, and everything else should work as usual.

I did try to hack and redirect the desktop to a different onedrive folder to try to make it compatible but it failed. So I just have a local desktop for all my windows 11 computers. A small compromise, but I'm okay with it as I generally try to keep my desktop clean and near empty. The onedrive app automagically placed a shortcut on my local desktop in the event i want to access the clouded onedrive desktop.

PS, anyone here try office 2003 on a snapdragon computer? Any success?
