If access is denied when trying to buy or download Windows 11 from the website, use one of these supported paths:
- Check whether the current PC is eligible for Windows 11.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If the device is eligible, Windows Update shows that Windows 11 is ready and provides Download and install.
- If Windows 11 was already purchased from Microsoft, install it from order history.
- Go to Order history.
- Find Windows 10 or Windows 11 and select Product key/Install.
- Select Copy for the key if shown, then select Install.
- Select Download tool now and follow the wizard.
- If the Microsoft website denies direct download access, use the Media Creation Tool path instead of the direct ISO download path.
- This workaround is called out in similar Microsoft Q&A cases for access-denied download errors.
- If the purchase was made through the Microsoft Store app as a Windows Pro upgrade, activation uses a digital license tied to the Microsoft account used for the purchase rather than a product key.
- If the current PC is older or unsupported, the supported options are:
- Buy a new PC with Windows 11, or
- Check whether the PC meets Windows 11 minimum requirements and then purchase and download a full version of Windows 11.
Important:
- Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is free if the device meets the requirements.
- There are no free upgrade paths from unsupported versions of Windows to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Installing a full version of Windows 11 on the current PC may require reinstalling apps and moving files, data, and settings. The installation can overwrite the existing hard drive contents.
