Hello:

Suddenly I cannot save documents in Word Version 16.112.3 2026 on my MacAir computer. I called and spoke to Apple advisors who helped me to discover that I have plenty of disk space and memory on my computer and in Drop Box so they suggested that this was a Microsoft Word problem, not a Mac/Apple Problem. How do I fix this problem?

    Hello Alison Lingo

Thank you for confirming that your Mac and Dropbox both have sufficient available storage.

This message does not necessarily mean that the Mac is actually out of memory or disk space. It can also appear when Word cannot create or replace the temporary file used during saving.

Since the previous answer provided by AI already covered updating Word, using Save As, and creating a new copy, please try these additional checks:

Test a completely new blank document locally:

Create a new blank document and save it directly to the Mac’s Desktop or Documents folder, not Dropbox:

    • If the blank document saves, the problem is likely connected to the original document or Dropbox location.
    • If the blank document also fails, the problem is more likely related to Word or its macOS permissions.

    Check Word’s macOS permissions

    • Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders and make sure Microsoft Word is permitted to access the relevant folders.
    • Also check Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access. If Microsoft Word is listed, enable it. If it is not listed, add Word, then fully quit and reopen the application.

    Temporarily disable Word add-ins:

If you use Grammarly, EndNote, citation-management software, or another Word add-in, temporarily disable or update it and test saving again.

Test Word in another macOS user account:

Create a temporary local macOS user account, open Word there, and try saving a blank document. If saving works in the new account, the issue is probably associated with permissions, preferences, or cached data in the original macOS profile.

I hope this helps narrow down the cause without risking the unsaved document.

Feel free reply back to this post and update me on this issue, I'll be happy to help.

Try these steps in order on the Mac:

    1. Update Office first
      • Open Word.
      • Select Help > Check for Updates.
      • Turn on automatic updates if offered, then select Check for Updates or Update.
      • Install all available Office updates, then test saving again.
    2. Try Save As to a new file name and location
      • In Word, select File > Save As.
      • Save the document with a different file name.
      • If possible, save it to a different local folder on the Mac.
      • This checks whether the problem is tied to the current file name or location.
    3. Save in a different format temporarily
      • Select File > Save As.
      • In File Format, choose Word Document (.docx) if the file is older, or choose another compatible format if needed.
      • Save the file.
      • This can help if the current file format is part of the problem.
    4. Turn on or verify AutoRecover
      • In Word, select Word > Preferences.
      • Under Output and Sharing, select Save.
      • Make sure Save AutoRecover info is enabled and set the save interval.
      • This will not fix the current save failure directly, but it helps reduce data loss if the issue happens again.
    5. If the file is stored in OneDrive, check available cloud storage
      • If OneDrive storage is full, Word may open files read-only or fail to save changes until storage is available again.
      • Check OneDrive free space from the OneDrive icon and Manage storage, or sign in to OneDrive and review used space.
    6. If the document still will not save, create a new copy
      • Open a new blank Word document.
      • Copy the content from the affected document and paste it into the new document.
      • Save the new document with a new name.
    7. If the issue affects only one document, the file may be damaged
      • Try opening it through File > Open and use Recover Text from the Open dropdown.
      • Then save it again as Word Document (.docx).
      • Note: formatting may change when recovering text.

If the problem started suddenly, the most directly supported fix is installing the latest Office updates. Microsoft also notes that save/autosave errors on Mac can happen when something interrupts Word’s temporary-file save process.
