Outlook 2007 no longer supports Modern Authentication for Outlook.com, and older Outlook clients that do not support Modern Authentication must be upgraded to continue syncing. The documented unsupported versions include Outlook 2007.
For Gmail specifically, current connection issues are commonly tied to Google sign-in/authorization and cached OAuth credentials in Classic Outlook. If the account is Gmail, the supported checks are:
- In Gmail, make sure IMAP is enabled:
- Gmail > Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP
- Under IMAP Access, select Enable IMAP
- Select Save Changes
- Verify the Gmail server settings if using IMAP:
- Incoming IMAP:
imap.gmail.com, SSL, port 993 - Outgoing SMTP:
smtp.gmail.com, SSL port 465 or TLS/STARTTLS port 587 - Authentication required
- Incoming IMAP:
- If Classic Outlook is showing Gmail sync/authentication errors, clear the cached Google OAuth credentials:
- Close Outlook.
- Open Credential Manager > Windows Credentials > Generic Credentials.
- Remove entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 that correspond to tp_google_imap_Oauth2.
- Reopen Outlook and sign in to Gmail again.
- If sync still fails in Classic Outlook, Outlook may prompt for Google sign-in again after removing the cached credentials. Complete the Google permission prompt to restore access.
- If the mail client does not support Modern Authentication, the documented fix is to upgrade to a newer Outlook version and add the account again.
