The new terms of use caused me to upgrade my personal/legacy copilot app on my Apple IPAD! First I lost my chat history completely, then it was restored but I still get a question to upgrade? When I do but ignore the question to change accounts then I have TWO copilot windows OPEN! ONE hidden behind the other!
One is open to my proprietary account which is not on a Microsoft domain, BUT THE OTHER is now my LAPTOP version which is running under an OUTLOOK account! UTTER MESS UP! HELP?

What is happening matches the current Copilot app transition for personal accounts:

    1. Personal-account Copilot experiences are being moved into a single updated Copilot app.
    2. If both Microsoft Copilot and the Microsoft Copilot app were used with a personal account, chats and created content are merged into the updated app.
    3. Personal and work or school accounts remain separate by design, and the account switcher should be used to confirm which account is active.
    4. If more than one linked personal account was used, such as different sign-in methods, history, preferences, and eligible content are brought together through the Microsoft account.

For the iPad behavior described, use this cleanup path:

    1. In Copilot, use the account switcher and confirm which account is currently active.
    2. Keep personal and work/school accounts separate. The app is designed so data does not flow between them.
    3. If one personal account has moved to the updated app and another has not, start a private browsing session, go to copilot.microsoft.com, and sign in with the personal account to check whether that account has already moved. If it redirects to copilot.com, that account has moved or is completing the move. If it stays on copilot.microsoft.com, that account can still be used there until it moves later.
    4. On mobile devices, the updated experience may appear as a new app install rather than a normal update. Seeing Get or Install instead of Update is expected on some devices.
    5. If chat history disappeared and then returned, that aligns with the migration behavior where most chats and content move to the updated app.
    6. If the upgrade prompt or account confusion continues, report it from the Copilot app: select the ellipsis (…) in the upper-right corner, select Send feedback > Report a problem, and include when it started, the iPad model, iPadOS version, and a screenshot showing the two-window/account behavior.

Supported facts about the upgrade prompt:

    • Most updates happen automatically.
    • There is no action required to prepare for the update.
    • Existing users are guided through the transition.
    • Web users are automatically redirected to the updated Copilot experience.

PS ... I have been a "certified" Microsoft user for decades! So I accumulated FOUR Microsoft accounts due to several different circumstances ... are these all void now?

    Hi Imol Monky

What you describe sounds consistent with the current Copilot app transition and account unification rollout. Microsoft has stated that the updated Copilot app supports both personal and work/school accounts in a single app experience, while keeping the data and chat histories for each account separate. The account switcher is used to move between them rather than merging the accounts.

A few points that may help:

    • Your multiple Microsoft accounts are not voided by this update. Personal and work/school accounts continue to exist separately.
    • The temporary disappearance and later return of chat history has been reported during the migration process, and content may take time to fully synchronize.
    • Upgrade prompts can still appear during the transition, especially if Copilot is detecting a different signed-in account than the one associated with a subscription or entitlement.
    • On the iPad, sign out of all Copilot accounts, force-close the app, reopen it, and sign in with only the account you intend to use first. Then verify the active account in the account switcher.

The specific behavior of two Copilot windows appearing simultaneously with different accounts is not documented as expected behavior, so that portion may be worth submitting feedback from within the Copilot app and including screenshots of the two-window/account state, along with your iPad model and iPadOS version.

If the issue persists, Microsoft Support would need to investigate the account migration and entitlement status, as this cannot be verified from a public forum.
