workaround for edge 154.0.4258.37 print to pdf not working

edge update appears to have broken print to pdf. is there any workaround?

Microsoft Edge: 154.0.4258.37

Works:

Physical printers
Send to OneNote
Edge "Save as PDF"

Fails:

Microsoft Print to PDF
Microsoft XPS Document Writer
Adobe PDF

Same virtual printers work correctly from Chrome and other Windows applications.

Edge debug log:

Followed by:

Check your printer and try again. Printing failed.

We are also experiencing this. It's a company wide issue affecting any computer updating to 154.0.4258.37. Hoping Microsoft will acknowledge this issue and release a fix.

We have reproduced the issue with Microsoft Print to PDF and Adobe PDF. When printing from the standard Edge print dialog, selecting either virtual printer results in no PDF being generated.

We did a same-device before/after test:

Edge 153.x → Microsoft Print to PDF worked

Edge automatically updated to 154.0.4258.37

Same device/user/printer → Microsoft Print to PDF no longer works

No Windows printer configuration changes were made between tests

Additional observations:

Edge Save as PDF continues to work

Microsoft Print to PDF works when the page is opened using Internet Explorer Mode

Adobe PDF exhibits the same failure as Microsoft Print to PDF

The issue therefore appears isolated to the standard Chromium Edge-to-virtual-printer path rather than the underlying PDF printer itself

We have a significant enterprise population now running Edge 154, while Edge 153 devices remain available for controlled comparison

Can you confirm whether this is a known regression in Edge 154.0.4258.37?

Is there an associated Microsoft bug/reference ID?

Is there a recommended enterprise workaround other than Edge Save as PDF or IE Mode?

We are also having this problem with users.
Edge 153 does not have the issue - it is the latest 154 Update that breaks this functionality.
They need to introduce an update with a fix or introduce a rollback option at least for 1-2 versions in case issues like this happen

Same issue here on Edge 154.0.4258.37 (Official build), Windows 11. Started overnight 28–29 September 2026, after Edge auto-updated.

Symptom: printing from Edge to Microsoft Print to PDF does nothing. No error, no Save As dialog, no file created. Print queue is empty and the printer shows Idle.

What I tested:
- Windows "Print test page" on Microsoft Print to PDF: works (Save As dialog appears)
- Notepad → Microsoft Print to PDF: works
- Firefox → Microsoft Print to PDF: works
- Edge → Microsoft Print to PDF via Ctrl+P: fails
- Edge → Microsoft Print to PDF via the system dialog (Ctrl+Shift+P): also fails, so the system-dialog workaround didn't help in my case
- No extensions enabled; resetting Edge settings to default made no difference
So the Windows printer, driver and spooler are fine. The fault is only in Edge handing the job to the virtual printer.

Workaround that worked: open the PDF in another browser (Firefox) or a desktop app and print to Microsoft Print to PDF from there.

How did you rollback Edge? Our workaround is to have our end users use Chrome. Microsoft Print to PDF works okay in Chrome.

Based on the details provided, you've already done some useful isolation. Since "Save as PDF" works, physical printers work, and the same virtual printers work from Chrome and other applications, the problem appears to be specific to the Edge print dialog when communicating with virtual PDF/XPS printers.

A few questions before further troubleshooting:
- Does the failure occur on all websites, including simple pages such as about:blank or a basic webpage like Bing?
- Are you using multiple Edge profiles, and if so, does the issue occur in all profiles?
- Have you tested whether the issue persists in an InPrivate window?
In the meantime, please try these quick checks:
1. Open Edge and go to edge://settings/reset
  
  Select Restore settings to their default values
  
  Restart Edge and test printing again
2. Test with extensions disabled:
  
  Open edge://extensions
  
  Turn off all extensions temporarily
  
  Restart Edge and test Microsoft Print to PDF
3. Create a temporary test profile:
  
  Go to Settings > Profiles > Add profile
  
  Create a new local profile and test printing there.

We are facing the same issue on multiple PCs, Restore settings and Turn off all extensions doesn't work for us.

Got a bunch of PCs doing the same thing. a brand new account on the PCs with a new profile with no extensions still has the issue.

I have tried restart Edge but that did not fix the Microsoft Print to PDF issues in Edge browser. Edge version Version 154.0.4258.37 (Official build) (64-bit) broke this functionality.
