That message usually indicates the printer was discovered, but Windows has not completed the driver or device setup.
Use this verification and reinstall path:
- Check Device Manager
- Open Device Manager.
- Verify where the printer appears in the device tree.
- If the device shows an error or is not fully installed, uninstall it.
- In Action, select Scan for hardware changes to force Windows to detect and reinstall it.
- Check Printers and Faxes / Devices and Printers
- Confirm the printer icon appears.
- Delete the printer if it is stuck or partially installed.
- Reinstall it using the Add Printer wizard.
- For WSD printers, add it by hostname or IP address
- Open Devices and Printers.
- Run Add printer.
- Select The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
- Enter the printer’s host name or IP address.
- If using Print Management, avoid “Search the network for printers” for Secure WSD printers
- That method does not properly use SSL for Secure WSD printers.
- Instead, in Print Management choose Add a TCP/IP or Web Services printer by IP address or hostname.
- Retest installation behavior
- Cancel and restart the installation once to confirm it can resume successfully.
- After installation succeeds, delete and reinstall the printer to confirm it installs cleanly.
- If the printer is hot-pluggable, disconnect it and confirm it disappears from Device Manager.
If the printer is visible but still not completing setup, the key checks are whether Windows correctly identifies it in Device Manager and whether reinstalling it through Add Printer using the printer’s hostname or IP address completes the installation.
