For a new HP OfficeJet on Windows 8, try this order:
- Power cycle the printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug it for 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
- Check how the printer is connecting
- USB printer: make sure the USB cable is firmly connected from the printer to the laptop.
- Wi‑Fi printer: make sure the printer’s wireless option is turned on.
- If the home has multiple Wi‑Fi networks, wireless access points, extenders, or separate SSIDs, the laptop and printer must be on the same network.
- If the printer has a wireless connectivity test in its menu, run it.
- Remove and reinstall the printer in Windows
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer and choose Remove device.
- Then go back to Printers & scanners and select Add a printer or scanner.
- If Windows finds the printer, select it and complete setup.
- If Windows does not find it automatically, add it manually
- In the printer setup, choose Add manually.
- For a printer connected directly to the laptop, select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
- Select Use an existing port.
- For USB, select the USB port.
- Install the driver:
- If the printer came with a driver disc, select Have Disk.
- Otherwise, select Windows Update, then choose the printer manufacturer and model.
- Finish the wizard and print a test page.
- If the printer shows an error state
- Check for low paper or ink.
- Make sure the cover is closed.
- Make sure there is no paper jam.
If the problem is specifically that the printer will not accept the Wi‑Fi pass key, that usually means the wireless setup on the printer needs to be redone and then the printer should be removed from Windows and added again.
