My Microsoft Office Business Standard license expired 3 days ago. I bought a new product key, but in my Microsoft account the button to reactivate the subscription isn’t active. How can I reactivate my license with the key I bought?

For Microsoft 365 Business Standard, reactivation depends on the subscription state and billing account type.

If the subscription expired 3 days ago, it is typically still in the Expired stage. In that stage, global or billing admins can reactivate the subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

    Use this path first:

    1. Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    2. Open Billing.
      • In Simplified view, select Billing.
      • In Dashboard view, go to Billing > Your products.
    3. Select the expired Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription.
    4. Reactivate based on billing account type:
      • MOSA: Under Subscription and payment settings > Subscription status, select Reactivate subscription, choose a payment method or Add payment method, then select Reactivate.
      • MCA: Under Billing settings > Subscription status, select Reactivate, then select Reactivate again.

    Important details:

    • If the tenant uses MOSA, reactivation requires a payment method in the admin center.
    • If the tenant uses MCA, reactivation creates a new subscription with the same commitment term as the previous one, starting on the day of reactivation.
    • The required role depends on billing type:
      • MCA: Billing account owner/contributor or Billing profile owner/contributor.
      • MOSA: At least Billing Administrator.

About the product key that was purchased:

    • Microsoft 365 apps and subscriptions are generally activated by signing in with the correct Microsoft account, not by entering a product key in the app.
    • A new, unused Microsoft 365 product key can be entered if prompted, or redeemed at www.office.com/setup.
    • If the Reactivate button in the admin center is unavailable, the next checks are:
      1. Confirm the account has the required billing/admin role.
      2. Confirm the subscription is Expired or Disabled and not Deleted. A deleted subscription can't be reactivated.
      3. Confirm the billing account type, because the reactivation flow differs between MCA and MOSA.

If the product key was intended to renew the subscription but the subscription page does not update after redemption, sign out of the Microsoft account, wait a short time, then sign back in and check the subscription again.

    Dear MARIO TREVES DE BONFILI,

If your Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription expired recently and the Reactivate option is unavailable or grayed out, the behavior depends on how the subscription was originally purchased.

If you purchased a new product key, you typically need to redeem the key separately rather than reactivating the expired subscription from the billing page. Microsoft provides a dedicated redemption portal for business product keys.

Here’s how you can complete the process:

For more details, you can also refer to this article: Where to enter your Office product key - Microsoft Support

If the subscription is still within the grace period and eligible for self-service renewal, you may also be able to reactivate it through:

Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Billing > Your products > Select the expired subscription > Reactivate subscription.

For more detailed information, please refer to this Reactivate your subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center

If the Reactivate button is disabled, the product key cannot be redeemed, or you are unable to locate the redemption option and have tried all the methods above but still cannot resolve the issue. I recommend opening a billing support request from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center > (Help & Support) so the billing team can verify the subscription status and assist with attaching the new license to your tenant.

You also can contact Microsoft Support team via phone service number: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support. The agent will be able to create a ticket for you under the affected tenant and then transfer this ticket to billing team who could help you.

To help you navigate the automated phone system (IVR), here's an example of what the conversation might look like:

IVR: What kind of problem are you worried about?

You: Subscription renewal with product key

IVR: What kind of product do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business

IVR: Does it count for education or business?

    You: For Business

IVR: Are you an admin? You: Yes

IVR: Is this related to billing or subscriptions?

    You: Yes

    IVR: Need a service request?

    You: Yes

This should help you connect with a live support agent who can help you directly.
