A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Yes. Since both Word and Excel show the same repair prompt, use this order:
- Update Office first
- Open any Office app.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
- Test in Safe Mode to check add-ins
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Type winword /safe for Word, or excel /safe for Excel, then press Enter.
- If the app opens in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- In Manage, select the add-in type and choose Go.
- Clear one add-in at a time, select OK, then restart the app normally.
- Older add-ins such as ABBYY FineReader and Dragon Naturally Speaking are known to cause problems.
- Run an Office repair
- Close all Office apps.
- In Windows, right-click Start and open Apps and Features or Installed apps.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair > Repair.
- This is more thorough than the Repair Now button in the error dialog. It repairs the whole Office suite, not just Word or Excel.
- Restart the PC after the repair finishes.
- Restart the device if the issue is intermittent
- Wait a few minutes, restart the laptop, sign back in, and open Word or Excel again.
- Install Windows updates
- Go to Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- This can help if older device drivers are causing Office to fail.
What the results mean:
- If Word or Excel works in Safe Mode: the problem is likely an add-in.
- If Safe Mode also fails: the problem is more likely Office installation corruption, so Online Repair is the best next step.
- If both apps fail the same way: focus on repairing the full Office installation rather than the individual document.
