A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Try these steps in order:
- Repair the workbook itself.
- Open Excel.
- Select File > Open.
- Browse to the workbook.
- Select the file.
- Select the arrow next to Open, then choose Open and Repair.
- First choose Repair.
- If that does not work, repeat the steps and choose Extract Data to recover values and formulas.
- If the workbook is stored on a network location or external drive, copy it to the local drive first, then try Open and Repair again. Disk or network errors can prevent the file from opening correctly.
- If the workbook was already open when it became corrupted, revert to the last saved version.
- Select File > Open.
- Double-click the workbook name.
- Select Yes to reopen it.
- This removes unsaved changes that may have caused the corruption.
- If the problem happens with Excel files in general, repair the Office installation.
- Close all Office apps.
- In Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select Modify.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- If the issue continues, run Online Repair.
- Note: Online Repair reinstalls Office components and can take 15–30 minutes.
- If the file opens after recovery, turn on AutoRecover to reduce future data loss.
- In Excel, select File > Options.
- Open the Save category.
- Check Save AutoRecover information every and set the interval.
- Confirm Disable AutoRecover for this workbook only is unchecked.
If the workbook still closes immediately, the most likely next step is recovering data from the file with Open and Repair or Extract Data, then using Online Repair for Excel itself.
