A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Since Repair has already been tried for 3 days and Excel still closes immediately, the next useful check is whether Excel can start in Safe Mode. That separates an add-in problem from an Office installation problem.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type excel /safe and press Enter.
- Confirm Safe Mode by checking the title bar. It should show Microsoft Excel (Safe Mode).
If Excel opens in Safe Mode:
- Go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- In the Manage list, select Excel Add-ins or COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear one add-in, select OK, and restart Excel normally.
- Repeat one at a time until the crashing add-in is identified.
- If present, disable older add-ins first such as Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord, or Dragon Naturally Speaking.
If Excel does not open in Safe Mode:
- The issue is not likely caused by add-ins.
- Run a full Office repair from Windows instead of relying on the repair prompt inside Excel.
For Windows 11:
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select the three dots > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair > Repair.
- Let it finish, then restart the PC.
For Windows 10:
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Online Repair > Repair.
- Restart the PC after it completes.
If Excel still fails after Online Repair:
- Perform a selective startup (clean boot) to check whether another background program or service is conflicting with Excel.
- If the issue continues after that, uninstall and reinstall Office.
The key point is that repeated repair prompts usually require either:
- disabling a bad add-in if Safe Mode works, or
- running Online Repair from Windows settings if Safe Mode does not work.
