Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Hello @BexBlu59Q,
To help determine the root cause of the issue, I recommend checking the following:
Firstly, I recommend checking the settings to verify that files are configured to open in the Desktop App by default. In Teams, go to Settings > Files and Links and confirm that "Always open Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files in" is set to "Desktop App" rather than Browser or Teams.
Secondly, to troubleshoot the missing Open in Desktop App option, please follow the steps in the Microsoft article " Desktop App Option is Missing When Editing Office Files in Teams - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn ".
The article explains the common causes, including unsupported file types, guest access limitations, SharePoint and Teams configuration, and client application requirements. It also provides the recommended checks to determine why the option is unavailable in a specific scenario.
Regarding files opening as read-only, if your account does not have edit permissions to the file or its SharePoint location, or if Word and Excel are unable to authenticate correctly to the client's Microsoft 365 tenant. Even if you originally created and uploaded the file, your ability to edit it depends on the permissions currently assigned to your account and whether the desktop application can obtain an editing token for that file. Guest access restrictions or document library settings can also result in files opening as read-only.
To narrow it down, I'd like to know the following :
- What version of macOS are you currently running?
- What version of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel are installed?
- Does the issue occur if you change to another device or operating system?
- Does the issue occur with all Teams files, or only specific files or document libraries?
- Can internal users within the same Team open the affected files in the desktop apps without issue?
- When a file opens as read-only, do you see any specific message or banner explaining why?
- Is the Open in Desktop App option missing for all files, or only certain files and locations?
- Have there been any recent changes to your Mac, Office applications, Teams client, or account configuration?
The answers to these questions will help identify the root cause of the issue and help provide more targeted troubleshooting and recommendations.
Looking forward to your response so we can get this sorted out for you together.
