Urgent MFA reset for admin account

I lost access to Microsoft Authenticator and cannot complete MFA for my Microsoft 365 administrator account. Please reset my authentication methods so I can regain access.

    A direct reset cannot be performed here.

    Use one of these supported recovery paths:

    1. If another Global Administrator or Authentication Administrator exists
      • That admin signs in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
      • Go to Entra ID > Users.
      • Select the affected admin account.
      • Open Authentication methods.
      • Choose Require re-register MFA.
      • This removes registered MFA methods such as phone numbers, Microsoft Authenticator apps, and software OATH tokens, and forces setup of a new MFA method at next sign-in.
    2. If no other admin can do this
      • Submit a Microsoft 365 support request for sign-in recovery.
      • If standard sign-in is blocked by MFA, use the unauthenticated support path mentioned in the support guidance: choose “I can’t sign in” so support can verify identity through alternate methods and initiate a secure MFA reset.
    3. If some security info is still available
      • Sign in to the Advanced security options page.
      • Add a new way to sign in or verify.
      • Confirm it with the code sent to the new method.
      • Remove the old method that is no longer accessible.
      • Do not change all security info at once, because the account may be restricted for 30 days.
    4. If all security info is lost but the password is known
      • Start sign-in.
      • At Verify your identity, select I don't have any of these.
      • Follow the prompts to replace security info.
      • After replacement, there is a 30-day wait before sign-in is allowed.
    5. After access is restored
      • Re-register Microsoft Authenticator or another allowed verification method.
      • Add at least one backup verification method if organizational policy allows it.

    Hi Lucy,

    MFA cannot be reset directly from this forum.

    If another admin exists, they should go to Microsoft Entra admin center > Users > select your account > Authentication methods > Require re-register MFA. Microsoft says this removes existing Authenticator/phone/OATH methods and forces you to register again. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/identity/authentication/howto-mfa-userdevicesettings

    If there are other IT Admins:

    If you are the only Admin:

    Option 1: You may need to contact the Data Protection Team at the service phone number via this link: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.

    The main objective is to go through the IVR (automated system) until you reach a live agent and emphasize this very important security factor. Please help me try this script below, this is a commonly used script for authentication issues to bypass IVR, but you can try to see if it helps get through the system. Please help me to speak loudly, only keywords, clearly and patiently waiting for the machine's response. First, when you call the hotline, they will ask you what kind of problem you are facing with.

    Answer: Authenticator.

B: Office 365 for business.
Verification: Education or corporate account?
B: For companies
A: Are you an administrator?

A: Are there other administrators in your organization?

    During the call, you must provide information related to the subscription, such as your company name, billing history, phone number, and alternate email address. This information helps data protection teams verify identities and securely regain access to administrator accounts.

    Option 2: Create a new tenant with trial subscription to access and submit a ticket in the Admin Center.

The goal is to create a temporary tenant with a Global Administrator account so that you can sign in to the Microsoft Admin Center. Once connected, you can submit a support ticket directly to Microsoft. Please remember to cancel the trial subscription once your issue is resolved to avoid unwanted charges.

    Once you contact the Data Protection team, you will be required to provide proof of ownership of the company. This allows them to verify their identity and help reassign the Global Administrator account.
