Can't add my custom domain to Azure Static Web App

Hello,

I have a custom domain purchased on an external provider and moved it to Cloudflare for DNS management. I am now trying to add this custom domain to my Azure Static Web App but I am getting "The custom domain requested is invalid." error message for both CNAME and TXT record types. The domain is "maña.com.ar¨.

How can I solve this? Our whole branding is based on this name so we cannot just change the domain.

Hi,

Unfortunately Azure Static Web App does not support Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) in my experience. In other words, the ñ in your domain name is causing the issue. Even if you convert your domain to Punycode it won't work. I wish I had better answer for you, but at least now you know why it is failing.

Alternatives would be to host your site on a VM and manage your own certificate(s), or use a static site hosting service that supports IDNs.

Thank you for the response. Is this IDN domain limitation only for Azure Static Web Apps or for all compute services with Custom Domains support in Azure? The static app is just for the mvp but I was thinking about App Service or ACA for the complete app implementation, would those support my domain?

It may work with App Service (I've not tested), so long as you bring your own certificate instead of using free managed certificate. You can test whether it will work or not fairly easily, say, would take perhaps 15 minutes or so.

Create a new web app with Basic SKU or higher, then try to add custom domain. When adding custom domain, choose All other domain services and Add certificate later, create necessary DNS TXT entry (asuid.maña.com.ar) with your Custom Domain Verification ID and A record as shown, then click Validate, and then click Add.

If you are able to successfully do the above that is good sign it will work. Final step is to upload your SSL certificate and create binding, and then test your site. You can use free certificate from Let's Encrypt if you want, or purchase one of the low cost certificates.

If the test fails be sure to delete the web app and its app service plan to avoid charges continuing to accrue.

I can help you test if you are unsure about any of the above.

Hello @Alejo Millo - The ñ is the problem. DNS doesn't carry non-ASCII characters, so your domain has to be entered as its punycode form:

maña.com.ar  ->  xn--maa-8ma.com.ar

That's also why both CNAME and TXT gave the same error. The name was being rejected before any DNS lookup, so the record type was never the issue.

You can confirm it in Cloudflare, which will already be showing the zone as xn--maa-8ma.com.ar.

And you can keep the root domain rather than moving to www. Set up an apex domain in Azure Static Web Apps covers it, and Cloudflare's CNAME flattening is one of the supported routes.

Thank you for the response. I have already tried using the converted punycode version of the domain and still getting the same error. Based on what I´ve read from the static apps documentation, Azure also does not support conversion from or to punycode.
