Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

To be able to assist you better, please clarify the following:

  • Do you have a third-party antivirus installed? If yes, which one?
  • Do you have any VPN software installed? (Even if it's not running at the moment) If yes, which one?

Also. What is the current "OS Build" of your Windows 11?

  • Press "Windows + R", type winver, and click OK.

If you prefer, share a screenshot. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Be sure to censor your email address if it appears. The Microsoft Q&A is public.

Looking forward to your reply.

    Glad to help.

Feel free to reinstall McAfee. However, download the latest version from the official website to ensure you have the most up-to-date program. Antivirus software often interferes with system updates if the program itself failed to update correctly or was running an older version.

If McAfee interferes again during a future Windows update, you can temporarily uninstall it to let the update complete. I also suggest contacting their support team to report this issue so they can investigate why the software is causing these conflicts.

    Best regards

    Try these:

    1. Pause/disable McAfee real‑time protection.
    2. Run Windows Update.
    3. Re‑enable protection immediately after.

Error 0x80071A91 usually means Windows Update cannot complete file operations because the transaction resource manager is not active. Common causes include corrupted NTFS transaction logs, a damaged component store, disk errors, antivirus or file system filter interference, or an incomplete previous update.

    Follow these steps in order.

    1. Back up important data first. Some repair steps modify update components and disk state.
    2. Reset the NTFS transaction logs Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
         fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\

Restart the PC after the command completes.
    3. Repair the Windows component store Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
         DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restart the PC, then try Windows Update again.
    4. Check system file integrity In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
         sfc /scannow

If it finds and repairs issues, restart the PC and try the update again.
    5. Reset Windows Update components In an elevated Command Prompt, run these commands one at a time:
         net stop wuauserv
         net stop bits
         net stop cryptSvc

         ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
         ren %windir%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

         net start cryptSvc
         net start bits
         net start wuauserv

Restart the PC and retry the update.
    6. Check the disk for errors In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
         chkdsk C: /f

If prompted, allow the scan at restart. This can take time.
    7. Temporarily remove or disable third-party antivirus/security software Third-party security software can block update operations. If such software is installed, temporarily uninstall or disable it, then try the update again.
    8. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter Go to: Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run

If the update still fails after these steps, review WindowsUpdate.log or CBS.log, and in Event Viewer check: Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > KtmRm for events around the failure time.
