Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
If the Outlook.com account shows as offline in Outlook for Windows, use these checks in order:
- Check the Outlook status bar at the bottom of the window.
- If it shows Working Offline, Disconnected, or Trying to connect..., Outlook cannot reach the mail server.
- Turn off offline mode.
- In classic Outlook, go to Send/Receive > Work Offline.
- If the Work Offline button is shaded, Outlook is offline. Select it to reconnect.
- If needed, open the message again and resend it, or select Send/Receive.
- If the Work Offline button is missing:
- For Microsoft 365 or Exchange accounts, Cached Exchange Mode might be turned off.
- Turn on Cached Exchange Mode, or contact the Exchange administrator.
- Verify whether the mailbox works on the web.
- Sign in to Outlook.com in a browser and check whether mail can be sent and received there.
- If mail does not work on the website either, check whether the account password was changed recently, whether the account is temporarily blocked, or use the Microsoft account sign-in helper.
- Check storage.
- If Microsoft cloud storage is full, Outlook.com cannot send or receive email. Messages sent while storage was full are bounced back to the sender and are unrecoverable.
- If only one mobile device is affected:
- In Outlook.com, go to Settings > General > Mobile devices.
- Delete the device partnership, select Save, power off the device, restart it, and sync again.
- If email is stuck in Outbox in classic Outlook:
- A known cause is a registry value named LoadTransportProviders.
- Warning: editing the registry is risky and can cause serious system problems if done incorrectly.
- The documented fix is to delete LoadTransportProviders from:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<x.0>\Outlook\Preferences
If the account is specifically an Outlook.com consumer account and the issue continues, use Outlook.com support from the Help menu or the Outlook.com support entry points.
