Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
For a newly downloaded Office 2024 on Mac that shows an error message and will not open, use this order:
- Check macOS version Office on Mac should be on macOS 12 or higher.
- Close all Office apps If any Office app is partially open, quit it first.
- Update Office with Microsoft AutoUpdate
- Open Finder > Applications > Microsoft AutoUpdate.
- If it is not there, check:
/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/ - Select Update All.
- After updates finish, try opening the Office app again.
- If Office was installed from the Mac App Store instead
- Open the App Store.
- Select Updates.
- Update the Microsoft apps, or select Update All.
- If the installer did not complete correctly, reinstall Office
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Remove the Office apps by moving Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook to Trash.
- Download Office again and run the installer package.
- During installation, if the installer says it is from an unidentified developer, wait 10 seconds, move the file to the desktop, then Control-click the file and choose Open.
- If the installer was downloaded but will not launch
- Make sure the download is complete.
- Move the Microsoft Office installer .pkg from Downloads to the Desktop and double-click it.
- If it still fails, delete the installer file, empty Trash, and download it again using Safari.
- After reinstalling Open an Office app from Finder > Applications or from Launchpad and test again.
If the issue is specifically Unknown Error 0x0 or License Not Found, updating Office through Microsoft AutoUpdate is the documented fix.
