Domain "already added to a different Microsoft 365 organization" — need domain released from a tenant I don't control

Issue: We own the domain heritageconsultants.net and am trying to add it to my Microsoft 365 organization. When I add it, verification succeeds, but I get this error:

"We have confirmed that you own heritageconsultants.net, but we can't add it to your account because the domain is already added to a different Microsoft 365 organization: nfp.onmicrosoft.com."

We have no access to that other organization (nfp.onmicrosoft.com) and no relationship with it — the domain appears to have been left behind in that tenant by a previous owner. I recently purchased the domain and am the current registrant.

What I've already done:

  • Completed Microsoft's TXT record ownership verification successfully (Microsoft confirmed I own the domain).
  • Added the required DNS records at my registrar (Wix).
  • Attempted to open a support request from the Microsoft 365 admin center, but I keep getting routed to the automated assistant / phone tree and cannot reach a person who can action this.

What I need: I'm requesting that the domain heritageconsultants.net be disassociated (released) from tenant nfp.onmicrosoft.com so I can add it to my own tenant, heritageconsultantsnet.onmicrosoft.com (Tenant ID:  [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]).

Proof of ownership available on request: a dated purchase invoice from my registrar (Wix) showing the domain registered under my account, plus the public WHOIS record. To be clear, I am not requesting any access to the other organization's tenant or data — only that the domain be released from it.

Can a moderator or Microsoft engineer help escalate this to the team that handles domain disassociation? Happy to provide any documentation needed. Thank you.

Dear Holly Rockwell,

I understand the situation; however, the domain is still associated with another Microsoft 365 tenant.

Unfortunately, no one in this community forum, including moderators and community contributors, can directly release or disassociate a domain from a Microsoft 365 tenant. This action can only be performed by Microsoft's support teams after validating ownership and reviewing the tenant relationship.

In this case, I recommend trying to create a support ticket through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center again. When creating the support request, look for an option to bypass the AI/Support Assistant if it is presented, and choose the path that allows you to contact a support engineer directly. For reference:  Get support | Microsoft Docs

  • On the bottom right side of the page, select Help & support.
  • On the Support Assistant page, type your message or question into the text box (request a domain disassociation/release)
  • You will get a set of results to your question or message > Select the Contact Support (headset) icon at the top of the page or at the bottom left. For example:

Additionally, you can try to contact Microsoft Data Protection Support by phone. For a full list of regional numbers, you can also visit this official page: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support. The support team will assist you as soon as possible. For reference:  Get support | Microsoft Docs

Note:

- You may also consider calling a Microsoft support number for a different region if support in your local region is unavailable or unable to route your case appropriately.

- While calling, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds, such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore it and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

If you are still unable to open a support request from your tenant, you may also consider contacting your Microsoft partner/reseller. Alternatively, if you have access to another Microsoft 365 tenant through a trusted colleague or organization, they may be able to help create a support ticket with Microsoft Support on your behalf and explain the domain release scenario.

I hope the information shared is helpful. If you have any questions or if I have misunderstood anything, please feel free to reach out.
