I purchased an official digital license from the Microsoft store, then when I reinstalled windows, it will no longer activate. I am using the exact same account and everything and have tried the troubleshooter among other things. I would really appreciate some help from a real person because all the "fixes" I have been given through the automated support has done nothing to help me.

If the license was purchased from Microsoft Store, it is typically a digital license rather than a 25-character product key. For a reinstall on the same device or after a hardware-related change, use this path:

    1. Check activation status:
      • In Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      • Confirm whether it shows Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account or Windows is not activated.
    2. Run Activation Troubleshooter again from the activation page:
      • Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
      • If the device hardware changed, use the option for I changed hardware on this device recently when it appears.
    3. If Windows was reinstalled with the wrong edition, activation will fail even with a valid digital license:
      • If there is a digital license for Windows 11 Pro but Windows 11 Home is installed, in the troubleshooter select Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro and then Start upgrade.
      • If there is a digital license for Windows 11 Home but Windows 11 Pro is installed, reinstall Windows 11 Home using the media creation tool. During setup, the product key step can be skipped, and Windows should activate automatically after installation.
    4. If a significant hardware change was made, especially motherboard replacement, Windows may no longer find the matching license automatically. In that case, use the reactivation path from the troubleshooter for hardware changes.
    5. If the troubleshooter still cannot activate Windows, contact Microsoft support directly for license reactivation help:

Important checks from the activation flow:

    • Windows activation requires an internet connection.
    • The troubleshooter requires an administrator account.
    • On Windows 10, the Troubleshoot option is available only when Windows is not activated; once activated, it disappears.

    1

Click your Start Button, then just type cmd and on the resulting list, right click Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.

Run this command in Command Prompt and press Enter.

    slmgr.vbs /ato

When that command completes, close Command Prompt and restart your PC, that command should force your system to contact the activation servers to reactivate your licence.

If that process is not successful and the troubleshoot method is not working to reactivate Windows, check in the Settings app to ensure the correct version (Home or Pro) is installed that matches the Windows licence you purchased.

If it is, you will need to contact Microsoft Support directly, they will be able to see your Windows licence on your account and reactivate Windows for you, this is just a user to user forum, no-one here has any account access.

What do you mean by, "when I reinstalled windows"? What version did you install Home or Pro? What did you have before purchasing from the store, Windows 10 or 11 and was it Home or Pro?

Have you looked at your account and does the purchase show? Here is an example image of a purchase I made a few years back.
