A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Try these checks in Word on Windows:
- Confirm Dictate is available:
- In Word, go to Home > Dictate.
- Make sure Word is signed in with an active Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Dictate requires Windows 10 or later.
- Check the microphone connection:
- If using an external mic or headset, make sure it is plugged in.
- Test whether the microphone works in other apps.
- Check Windows microphone settings:
- Open Control Panel and review the microphone settings.
- Make sure the correct microphone is selected and not muted.
- If Word says it cannot detect or start audio from the microphone:
- Test the microphone to make sure it is working.
- Adjust the microphone input level.
- If using the built-in mic, try an external microphone or headset.
- If Dictation starts but cannot hear speech:
- Move to a quieter location.
- Make sure the microphone is not muted.
- Speak clearly and check for background noise.
- If the problem is browser-related in Microsoft 365 for the web:
- Allow microphone access for the Microsoft 365 site in the browser.
- Refresh the page, select Dictate again, and allow microphone permission.
If the Dictate button is missing, that usually means one of these applies:
- No active Microsoft 365 subscription
- Windows version is older than Windows 10
- Word version is Office 2016 or 2019 for Windows without Microsoft 365
