When opening certain documents, they open in what appears to be Chinese. How can I correct this?

If the document text itself is showing as Chinese or another East Asian script, the most common cause in the available guidance is missing East Asian fonts or language support on Windows.

Try this on Windows 10:

Select Start > Settings > Time & language.
Select Region & language.
Select Add a language.
Add the East Asian language needed for the document. Windows downloads the related fonts.

This does not necessarily change the default Windows language. It adds the language resources and fonts so the document can display correctly.

If the issue is only in Office for certain shared documents, Office may be substituting fonts because the original East Asian fonts are not installed. Adding the language and associated fonts is the documented fix for that scenario.
