If sound stops working after a Windows update and returns after uninstalling that update, the supported fixes are:
- Install any newer pending Windows updates first. Sometimes a later update replaces missing components or fixes the audio issue.
- Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the PC.
- Update the audio driver.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
- Follow the prompts, then restart the PC.
- If the problem started immediately after the update, roll back the audio driver.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device > Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Restart the device.
- This option is available only if a previous driver version exists.
- Restart the Windows audio services.
- Select Start, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Right-click Windows Audio > Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder > Restart.
- Test audio again.
- Reinstall the audio driver if updating or rollback does not help.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the sound device > Uninstall device.
- If shown, select the checkbox to remove the driver.
- Restart the PC.
- Save open work first, because restart is required.
- If Windows still does not restore sound, try the generic Windows audio driver.
- In Device Manager, right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- Select the audio device, choose Next, and complete installation.
- If the issue only happens with that update and uninstalling it restores sound, install the latest audio driver directly from the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support site.
- If rollback is unavailable or does not work, a system restore point created before the update can be used to restore the PC.
